Te toi whakairo, ka ihiihi, ka wehiwehi, ka aweawe te ao katoa.
The arts are powerful forms of expression that recognise, value, and contribute to the unique bicultural and multicultural character of Aotearoa New Zealand, enriching the lives of all New Zealanders. The arts have their own distinct languages that use both verbal and non-verbal conventions, mediated by selected processes and technologies. Through movement, sound, and image, the arts transform people’s creative ideas into expressive works that communicate layered meanings.

Photography gives you an opportunity to explore, interact and interpret the world around you. Our ability to communicate and interpret visual information is developed. Photography offers a chance to be creative and enhance your personal growth and general wellbeing. If you like thinking about and creating visual art ideas this is a great course to take.
In this course you will research and manage your own personalised project inspired by our own interests and passions. You will do this by researching photographers you are inspired by which will build your knowledge base of photographers. You will learn how to create series of photographs to communicate and give depth to an idea and how to build multiple series to create a cohesive portfolio of work. This course will provide flexibility and freedom to express your ideas and work creatively, as well as develop critical thinking and the ability to interpret the world around you.
You will develop your art making skills and ideas:
Engage in a personalised project which is presented as a digital assignment and portfolio. This includes making technical studies, proof sheets, shotlists and notations. It can include sketches, samples and compositional planning.
Advance your technical ability by learning ways to compose a photograph, control light, handle a camera, and explore post production techniques in Adobe Photoshop.
Explore conceptual ideas through creating a series of photographs and building a body of work to communicate your own personal point of view.
You will develop your broader knowledge of photographic contexts and genres through your personal project and photographers you choose to investigate.
Create a 3 x A1 body of work (portfolio)
Your work will be assessed through two internal achievement standards and one external achievement standard.
Standard AS91447 - Use drawing to demonstrate understanding of conventions appropriate to photography (internal)
Standard AS91451 - Systematically clarify ideas using drawing informed by established photographic practice (internal)
Standard AS91456 - Produce a systematic body of work that integrates conventions and regenerates ideas within photographic practice (external)
