Ngā Toi - The Arts
Ngā Toi - The Arts
Te toi whakairo, ka ihiihi, ka wehiwehi, ka aweawe te ao katoa.
The arts are powerful forms of expression that recognise, value, and contribute to the unique bicultural and multicultural character of Aotearoa New Zealand, enriching the lives of all New Zealanders. The arts have their own distinct languages that use both verbal and non-verbal conventions, mediated by selected processes and technologies. Through movement, sound, and image, the arts transform people’s creative ideas into expressive works that communicate layered meanings.

Dance is an art form that allows ākonga (students) to:
Create innovative ways of moving and expressing oneself
Explore and develop their own distinct choreographic identity and performance style
Develop a deeper understanding of technical skill for specific genres
Build confidence and enhance their hauora (well-being)
Work collaboratively on shared tasks and performances
In this course you will produce a dance to effectively realise your chosen concept, interpreting your ideas through production, design and performance. You will refine your skills as a choreographer, applying your knowledge to competently realise an intention. Throughout this course you will have the chance to showcase your dance skills in both individual and group performances. An integral part of this course is to refine your knowledge of dance to critically analyse, interpret and evaluate a dance performance and also demonstrate an in depth understanding of the development of dance in New Zealand.
As part of this course you will be developing your mātauranga (knowledge) of dance through ngā mōhiotanga o mua (exploration) and mahi (performance). Therefore, you will have the opportunity to develop your tito nekehanga (choreographic skills) through a range of solo, duet and group opportunities.
Students will:
Learn a variety of dance genres, for example, modern, contemporary, fusion, hip hop and commercial dance
Develop performance and technical skills specific to each genre of dance
Choreograph their own dances, and performance material for assessments
Perform in front of live audiences
Progress will be monitored through in-class assessments
Your work will be assessed internals and external standards.
