Learning a new language provides a means of communicating with people from another culture and exploring one’s own personal world. Languages and cultures play a key role in developing our personal, group, national, and human identities. Every language has its own ways of expressing meanings; each has intrinsic value and special significance for its users.
This course offers both a combination of internal and external assessment.

Studying NCEA Level 1 Japanese in New Zealand offers students valuable language and cultural skills, with opportunities to expand their career prospects in Japan's global economy, while also developing cognitive skills such as problem-solving, critical thinking, and creativity. It provides insight into Japan's unique history, literature, and popular culture, broadening students' horizons and deepening their understanding of the world.
The course aims to provide students with a basic understanding of the Japanese language and culture. Students will learn fundamental Japanese vocabulary and grammar, as well as communication skills in various contexts, such as introducing themselves, studying at a Japanese school, ordering food, shopping, traveling and asking for directions. This course will prepare students to communicate with Japanese speakers in everyday situations and provide a solid foundation for further study of the Japanese language. Students at this level are at the survival skills stage.
You will learn to communicate in Japanese using a range of skills. This involves:
interacting with others in the class in Japanese through games, and pair work
listening and responding to authentic texts such as YouTube videos, songs, and audio
reading and responding to short texts which include familiar vocabulary
developing writing and grammatical skills by using mini whiteboards, online resources, and games
Your work will be assessed through two internal achievement standards and two external achievement standards.

Standard AS91957 - Communicate in Japanese for a chosen purpose (internal)
Standard AS91958 - Demonstrate understanding of written Japanese related to everyday contexts (external)
