Learning a new language provides a means of communicating with people from another culture and exploring one’s own personal world. Languages and cultures play a key role in developing our personal, group, national, and human identities. Every language has its own ways of expressing meanings; each has intrinsic value and special significance for its users.
This course offers both a combination of internal and external assessment.

Learning Spanish is a rewarding endeavor that opens doors to new experiences and opportunities. With over 460 million native speakers worldwide, learning this vibrant language enables effective communication with a vast and diverse community. From a practical standpoint, Spanish language skills enhance career prospects, as it is highly sought after in various industries. By learning Spanish, students gain not only linguistic skills but also a broader worldview and a connection to the richness of Hispanic heritage.
In this course, you will learn how to interact with others in Spanish about future plans, university and gap years, work and part time jobs, possibly film studies to explore topics of Spanish Civil War and The Camino de Santiago. There is an expectation that students will do lots of speaking with their peers, to improve their spoken Spanish skills.
You will learn to communicate in Spanish using a range of skills. This involves:
interacting with others in the class in Spanish through games, pair work, and role play
listening and responding to authentic texts such as YouTube videos, songs, and audio
reading and responding to texts which include various levels of vocabulary
developing writing and grammatical skills by using mini whiteboards, online resources, and games and developing editing and drafting skills
Your work will be assessed through two internal achievement standards and two external achievement standards.
Standard AS91148 - Demonstrate understanding of spoken Spanish on familiar contexts (external)
Standard AS91149 - Interact in spoken Spanish to share and respond to information, ideas and opinions (internal)
Standard AS91150 - Give a spoken presentation in Spanish which communicates information, ideas and opinions (internal)
Standard AS91151 - Demonstrate understanding of a variety of written and/or visual Spanish text(s) on familiar matters (external)
Standard AS91152 - Write a variety of text types in Spanish to convey information, ideas, and opinions in genuine contexts (internal)
