Ngā Toi - The Arts
Te toi whakairo, ka ihiihi, ka wehiwehi, ka aweawe te ao katoa.
The arts are powerful forms of expression that recognise, value, and contribute to the unique bicultural and multicultural character of Aotearoa New Zealand, enriching the lives of all New Zealanders. The arts have their own distinct languages that use both verbal and non-verbal conventions, mediated by selected processes and technologies. Through movement, sound, and image, the arts transform people’s creative ideas into expressive works that communicate layered meanings.

In this course you will explore and investigate a variety of dance genres. You will develop technical dance skills, strength and creativity through a combination of practical and written analysis, and evaluation. You will develop your knowledge and understanding of the dance elements and how these can be applied and analysed to support your choreographic skills.
Our stimulus for the year will have an over-arching theme that is directly connected to our local curriculum, including house histories, whakataukī, kowhaiwhai patterns.
An integral part of this course is developing your mātauranga (knowledge) of dance through ngā mōhiotanga o mua (exploration) and mahi (performance). Therefore, you will have the opportunity to develop your tito nekehanga (choreographic skills) through a range of solo, duet and small group opportunities.

Learn a variety of dance genres, for example, modern, contemporary, fusion, hip hop and commercial dance.
Develop performance and technical skills specific to each genre of dance.
