Te toi whakairo, ka ihiihi, ka wehiwehi, ka aweawe te ao katoa.
The arts are powerful forms of expression that recognise, value, and contribute to the unique bicultural and multicultural character of Aotearoa New Zealand, enriching the lives of all New Zealanders. The arts have their own distinct languages that use both verbal and non-verbal conventions, mediated by selected processes and technologies. Through movement, sound, and image, the arts transform people’s creative ideas into expressive works that communicate layered meanings.

Choosing Art Design can teach you very valuable skills that will prepare you for the world and a wide variety of careers in the future.
As an Art Design student your own problem solving will equip you with the skills to think creatively and logically and to take advantage of emerging technologies. You will be encouraged to think outside the box and learn to understand the importance of the conventions of design.
Students who study Design will:
Create your own client brief and use this to rebrand their 'look and feel' through a range of design and illustration tasks.
Develop an understanding of established designers' work and apply these ideas to your own work.
Develop critical thinking and the ability to interpret the world around you.
Develop design techniques and research skills.
Develop Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and Indesign skills and conceptual thinking for further art study at tertiary level in a range of design and art disciplines.
You will develop your design skills and ideas through:
Engaging in a personalised project inspired by your own client brief, through an independent digital workbook practice and portfolio
Brainstorming and creating your own logo for your client and developing your understanding of various design task visual conventions including (but not limited to) website and app design, merchandise, brochures, character design and poster
You will also self-direct and extend your skills using the Adobe creative packages (Photoshop, Illustrator, Fresco and Indesign)
Participating and contributing to discussion using design terminology on how to critique design and improve your own work
Do you enjoy game design and would like to develop your own characters, worlds and NPC for your game? Do you have a burning issue, project or company which you would like to re-brand?
The great thing about studying Design at Year 13 is that you get to design the brief for your course. The whole year is project based and you start with developing your own client brief and developing it.
Your work will be assessed through two internal achievement standards and one external achievement standard.
Standard AS91445 - Use drawing to demonstrate understanding of conventions appropriate to design (internal)
Standard AS91450 - Systematically clarify ideas using drawing informed by established design practice (internal)
Standard AS91455 - Produce a systematic body of work that integrates conventions and regenerates ideas within design practice (external)
