English is the study, use, and enjoyment of the English language and its literature, communicated orally, visually, and in writing, for a range of purposes and audiences and in a variety of text forms. Learning English encompasses learning the language, learning through the language, and learning about the language.

The study of English in Aotearoa, New Zealand:
Enhances lifelong learning and effective communication skills such as reading, writing, speaking, viewing and listening, equipping you to make appropriate language choices and apply them in a range of contexts.
Contributes to your developing sense of identity and connection with the world, and your awareness of Aotearoa’s, New Zealand's bicultural heritage. You will learn how to deconstruct and interrogate a variety of texts in order to understand the power of language to enrich and shape your own and others’ lives.
Allows you to develop skills that empower you to think critically and express yourself creatively.
In this course you will learn to be a lifelong learner, who is creative and critical, by reading, viewing and listening to a range of texts and language use in context. You will learn to effectively communicate your ideas in a variety of creative ways.
Students will engage in a course that is shaped around texts chosen to meet the interests and needs of students. The course content includes the teaching of: textual analysis skills; language and context analysis skills; and, writing skills.
Your work will be assessed through two internal achievement standards which are assignments completed through your chosen communication mode and an external achievement standard (exam).
Standard AS91924 - Demonstrate understanding of how context shapes verbal language use (internal)
Standard AS91926 - Develop ideas in writing using stylistic written conventions (internal)
Standard AS91927 - Demonstrate understanding of significant aspects of unfamiliar texts (external)
