The social sciences learning area is about how societies work and how people can participate as critical, active, informed, and responsible citizens. Contexts are drawn from the past, present, and future and from places within and beyond New Zealand.

Classical studies is the study of the people, places, and events of the classical world and how they influence the modern world. Classical studies is an interdisciplinary subject: students engage with literature, languages, art, history, science, technology, religion, and philosophy.
Wondrous Worlds studies the people, places, and events of five early civilisations, Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece, Ancient Rome, Norse and pre-European Māori. In Wondrous Worlds you will explore a range of different topics like entertainment, mythology and religion and explore how these earlier civilisations have influenced the modern world.
You will learn to explore community, cultural identity, values, and perspectives and think critically about human behaviour and relationships to appreciate the civilisations of ancient Greece and Rome, understand the past and the present, and to imagine possible futures.
In this course, you will explore and investigate a variety of topics to do with the everyday life and social activities of the five cultural groups we will be exploring such as sports, theatre, food, leaders, events, religion and more. You will develop your knowledge and understanding through a combination of creative and written activities.
Students will explore the worlds of the ancient Greeks and Romans by looking at powerful and influential people and unusual themes through the story of Oedipus.
Students will:
Develop an understanding of the forms of entertainment from earlier civilisations and how these compare and have influenced entertainment today.
Develop an understanding of how power, leadership, slavery and gender interacted in past societies and how they have influenced those systems today.
Develop an understanding of the role of religion in the lives of people from past cultures.
Explain to what extent Hollywood films are an accurate portrayal of events from the past.
