Classroom Management

Reflect: What is your definition of Classroom Management? Do you believe that classroom management is one specific strategy or is it a plethora of various techniques, strategies, and procedures?
Readers will be able to identify what classroom management is and describe the various aspects of classroom management
Readers will be able to identify three different ways that the Pandemic has affected and altered the teaching environment and experience of a 1st grade teacher.
2.1: New technology skills have to be learned and certain certifications have to be completed.
2.2: Classroom management strategies have to be changed around to best fit the needs of a virtual classroom.
2.3: A few challenges were faced when having to transition from a traditional face-to-face classroom to a virtual classroom.
Classroom Management does not have a true definition but there are several associations tied to it. The most common associations tied to classroom management are discipline and control (Little & Little-Akin, 2008, p. 1).
Classroom Management is more of a broad concept. It is considered to be "the wide variety of skills and techniques that teachers use to keep students organized, orderly, focused, attentive, on task, and academically productive during a class" (The Glossary of Education Reform, 2014).
Classroom management encompasses many tools that teachers can use. Technology is a great tool to use for classroom management. For example, a great web-based classroom management tool that teachers can use as a rewards system is a tool called "Class Dojo" (Cho et al., 2020). Moreover, one of the most common Classroom strategies used in classrooms all around the country and even the world is praise and rewards. Having a praise and rewards system can keep students on task and motivated. So, it is important to avoid punishing the whole class as well (Guido, 2018). Instead, you should individually address the student(s) that are causing trouble.
Scenario
The Teacher
It's a Friday and everyone is doing their assignment. Mrs. Bell is walking around the classroom observing everyone while they do their assignments. She reminds her students that good behavior can get them far in life. Once Mrs. Bell stops observing her class, she goes to take a seat. She's surprised when she sees that someone is walking up to her desk already since she had just sat down. To her surprise, the student that walked up was Bobby. He was already done with his assignment, and better yet, he was the first one done!
Bobby was usually a student who didn't do too well in class and was disruptive because of the frustration he felt when he couldn't do things right. But when he would be disruptive instead of Mrs. Bell reprimanding him, she would encourage him and still praise him for attempting to do his work. And she would always let him know that she is proud of him.
When Bobby came up he thanked Mrs. Bell and explained to her that all of her encouragement really helped him and pushed him to be a better student.
A Student
Interview
The woman on the left is my interviewee and also my beautiful mother. Mrs. Sharonda Lewis is a 1st grade teacher and works for Suffolk Public Schools. She was originally a face-to-face teacher but the Pandemic changed everything! That hasn't stopped her love for teaching but it has definitely made it harder to be a teacher during these tough times (S. Lewis, personal communication, February 11, 2021).
Takeaway #1: New technology skills have to be learned along with the completion of certifications.
When transitioning from a traditional classroom setting to virtual classroom, you have to learn new skills to best fit your classroom needs (S. Lewis, personal communication, February 11,2021). In Mrs. Lewis's case, that meant that she had to learn different platforms and get a certification.
Takeaway # 2: Changes have to be made to classroom management strategies to best fit the needs of a virtual classroom.
Essentially what Mrs. Lewis had to was change her classroom expectations around. Because part of classroom management is how you "manage" the class. She had rules for their zoom meetings like not typing in the chat unless its necessary, or they should be paying attention at all times, or that students should have all their materials prepared and they should have them at class (S. Lewis, personal communication, February 11, 2021).
Takeaway # 3: You will face a few challenges when trying to teach in a virtual setting.
Virtual learning is pretty different compared to traditional learning. There are a lot of challenges that you wouldn't really face if everyone was still in a traditional face-to-face learning setting. One of the biggest factors that teachers struggle with while teaching amidst a pandemic is student involvement (S. Lewis, personal communication, February 11, 2021).
Conclusion
All in all, after conducting my interview and conducting research, I would say that I learned some very important information. Classroom management is not limited to just one or two strategies but is ultimately a large array of techniques, strategies, procedures, etc. Working amidst a pandemic is quite a challenge, especially for teachers. After my interview with Mrs. Lewis, I learned that COVID does make it harder to teach. It also can make it harder for students because they are not getting the same interaction they would if they were face to face. Being a teacher in a pandemic, you have to be adaptable and ready for anything. Like in Mrs. Lewis class, she had to change some rules, learn new technology skills, and face some challenges such as students' attentiveness. Being a future educator, learning about classroom management and how it changes in a pandemic is very valuable information; it will prepare me for what lies ahead.
