I am Rockville, MD born and raised though I've spent a year in Los Angeles, CA and have been residing in Norfolk since 2016. Through living in three different cities one topic I have become increasingly interested in is diversity. Diversity in all three of the citites I've lived in means completely different things and have each taught me new perspectives and appreciations. Learning is a value I have always had along with art and I believe I will be able to use art to teach expression and individuality as well as the importance of diversity so my students will be able to understand what their peers express.
I know what it means to make good art and I know that the world is not fair for anyone, positively or negatively. If nothing else, my co-workers and students will learn to identify cultural, socioeconomic, political, and moral differences that will act to inform their decision making. Students will be able to create art that meets a number one policy: Art is art because it was important to you. Co-workers will be able to better level with their students if they are able to understand their perspectives.
I will always be learning. Art is always changing along with our social and civic climates. There's always something to be kept to date on and I will always try my best to keep up. I will need to be open-minded and willing to use the new things I learn to become the type of teacher I want to be. That person is confident in their skills and talents but is open to learning new ways to do things. That person is sensitive to others' individuality and putting in the effort to see things their way as well as be respectful of it.
What is the purpose of school to me?
Provide essential knowledge to comprehend and navigate the world around us
What do I think should be taught?
Expression, real-life application, and literacy
What is my method of teaching?
Teacher-Centered learning
What are my preferred philosophies?
Essentialism along with Existentialism and Social Reconstructivism
Can I paint an image of what a day in my classroom would look like?
My lessons would begin with a Teacher-Centered assignment or lecture. Once my students confirm they understand the topic they will begin working individually or in groups. Once the project has begun the following classes will be workdays until major checkpoints while myself and other students will be available for help along the way. Students are encouraged to create schedules to pace themselves to finish work within due dates as well as find creative paths to create their projects.
