Who am I?
My name is Gage Holland. I am from Gloucester, Virginia, but I have just recently started living in Norfolk, Virginia. What makes me who I am today is really based on how I was raised and what I have experienced. I am currently studying to become a High School Level Spanish teacher. I have this interest because I had amazing Spanish teachers in high school and would love to share what I learned to future generations.
What I Know
I have had the pleasure of experiencing life in the Hispanic community, specifically the migrant workers who live on the Eastern Shore. There I was able to witness Hispanic customs and understand the language from natural speakers. I have had some experience teaching Spanish on the Elementary and High School level. I think I would be able to share what I learned and experienced with my classmates to help them become the great teachers they strive to be.
What I have to Learn
I still do not have the greatest understanding of how to navigate the classroom from the teachers perspective. As a Teacher's Assistant in High School I was able to teach a few lesson plans, but there is still much for me to learn. I also what to be able to create usable and easily understood lesson plans for my future students. I would also like to have a better understanding of how to teach online.
The teacher I will become
In my opinion the purpose of school is to prepare children for the world ahead, teach basic curriculum, and encourage youth to follow their interest and passions. As a Spanish teacher, I want my future students to be culturally understanding and knowledgeable, while also learning a second language. My experiences in High School with Spanish really inspired me to continue and help others learn this great language. Hopefully my students will be able to learn from first-hand experiences like myself and not have to be stuck with a textbook. I hope my students will be able to visit Spanish communities and see the Spanish culture.
I want my students to value my class and teachings and not look at it as a class that is required. I look forward to making the an exciting, informative, and helpful environment. I want to be a teacher that students will be able to get along with and also respect. I also want my students to be able to communicate with one another and have an equal understanding of the Spanish language and culture.
I view Progressivism as an effective way of teaching students. I want my students to be able to do what they want with Spanish. Foreign languages can help with brain development, especially at a young age. I strongly believe that everyone should learn a foreign language just so they can have a greater understanding of the world around them. I think if children were given the option to learn any language they would like to it would help with their growth.
I would say the one word that describes me as a teacher is encouraging. I chose this word because I want my students to do what they want with a foreign language. I would also help my students as much as I can. I would describe my students as excited because I want people to walk into my classroom and see students who are excited to learn the Spanish language and Spanish culture.

I try to answer any questions you may have.
Hey! That is awesome that you want to teach Spanish and that you have had experience with that sort of culture...I bet you will have so many interesting stories to tell your students one day! -Maggie Currin
Hey Gage, I loved reading your authors page. I have taken quite a few years if spanish in high school and college. Although, i definetely would not call myself a fluent speaker, I believe I can hold a decent conversation with someone in spanish. I also believe that encouraging students to do better in class and in life is a great quality for any teacher to have. I also believe that learning another language it a great oppurtunity for someone to learn more about the world. - Thomas Ward
Hi, Gage! It must have been an amazing opportunity to teach Spanish at the elementary level. None of the schools I grew up with offered foreign language that young. Reading about your passion for teaching foreign language has been so inspiring. Thank you for sharing these experiences! -Serena DeSocio
Hi Gage, Thank you for sharing who you are and sharing your experiences with the class. I was never very good in Spanish class, so I think it's very cool that you aspire to take on such a topic. Having the hispanic background is also very interesting and yet helpful. Learning another language gives students the ability to strive to do the same and explore other cultures. I think you will make a great Spanish teacher and i'm excited to see where your journey goes throughout the rest of the semester. -Hannah Conway
