What I Know
One thing I do know that I could share with others is that the world we live in is constantly changing. This is not always a bad thing, and can allow people to become informed and accepting of new concepts and ideas. I could teach my classmates about how teaching takes a lot from a person, both physically and emotionally. This is not a job that stops once you walk out of your classroom door. Many hours of our lives will be spent devoted to our jobs and students. I would be able to teach my students how to become citizens of the world that are responsible and respectful.
What I Have to Learn
In order to become an effective teacher that understands what to do to help all of my students succeed, I will need to become more knowledgeable of different cultures and disabilities. Both of these things affect the way students learn and retain new information. It is important to make all students feel safe and comfortable in a classroom, and I will want to be respectful of the different backgrounds that my students come from. To do this, I will make sure to get to know each student personally from the first time I meet them. I could also get more information about specific backgrounds by talking to my students' parents.
The Teacher I Will Become
I believe the purpose of school is for students to investigate and learn new ideas and skills that will help them succeed in the future. The most important things that my students will learn are academics, social skills, and critical thinking skills. They will learn these skills in a student-centered manner, meaning that they will be more in control of their own learning. Two philosophies that best describe my views on teaching are progressivism and essentialism. These deal with teaching problem solving and essential knowledge, where students learn by doing and working with others. I hope to be a teacher that is inspiring and that my students leave my class excited and eager to learn more.
