Hey guys! I'm Laurie, but i go by Danielle. I am 20 years old. A little bit about my life: I am an only child and I grew up in a private Christian school my whole life. I had eight people in my graduating class. Crazy right? at the end of my eighth grade year, my parents got separated and that was really tough on me. I was in a dark place and on top of that i was starting high school. My friends who i thought were my friends were not really and that was hard for me to accept. I remember my spanish teacher was the one person i could confide in and she really helped me get through that time. I knew someday i wanted to be a teacher just like her. by senior year everything started looking up and i was on a great track. Now i have just graduted from tcc with my associates of science and I am in my junior year here at odu. everyone who knows me knows that i have wanted to be a teacher from the beginning. I rememebr being as young as 5 playing "school' and being the "teacher". I would set up a row of chairs in my kitchen and put my doll babies on each chair pretending they were riding the school bus to school. Originally, i started out wanting to do special ed and everyone told me i was crazy. They said teaching wasn't a good career to get into. I never let that get me down. i've always just had a heart for kids and i knew teaching is what i wanted to do. after i graduated high school i went back and became a teacher at the summer camp and fell in love with teaching even more. that's when i realized i wanted to teach kindergarten. i now work in the after school program with kids from age four to sixteen and as a teachers assistant for the preschool class. It has grown my love for teaching and kids even more. i'm so excited i've chosen this career path. I look forward to help growing the minds of kids.
heres a quick video of a few more things about me and my life
Here's a picture of my class when we carved a pumpkin for halloween. (it's extremly hard to get twelve 4 year-olds to all look at the camera LOL)
i know that school can be hard
i know students can be mean
i know that life is difficult and has challenges
i know that students learn different ways
i know that some students learn at a slower pace than others
I know that some students can teach themselves
i know students need support/ encouragement
i know students need to be involved in activites
I have a lot left to learn, but some things i want to learn specifically for teaching is:
learning differnt teaching methods
learning how to be diverse in my classroom
learning how to understand the students needs
learning that it's okay to let the students work together and talk amongst themselves sometimes
Learning how to ask for help if needed
I want to be the teacher who:
the one who is kind and compassionate
the one who students can come to talk to when they are struggling
the listener
the one who pushes you to do better
the one who understands
the one who makes you think outside the box
Comments are welcomed :)
It's really awesome that you've been able to work with kids so much and discover your passion for teaching them! I volunteered at a VBS one summer to see if teaching elementary was for me and, after a week of all of them, while it was fun, I knew it wasn't for me. Elementary ed is tough stuff! - Noah T.
I enjoyed your page, I can totally agree with you about the friends thing i've been there plenty of times and it really is something that takes a while to get through. I also enjoyed the picture of you and the little ones pumpkin carving, I took ten 1 year olds to the pumpkin patch. HARDEST THING EVER lol. - Demya D.
Laurie - You and I have something in common; our parents splitting up during the end of middle school (beginning of high school). So, I definitely know how you felt! I love your Bitmojis and your color theme! We actually used the same knowledge Bitmoji! Not to offend you, but I have one friendly suggestion - make your font a little bit bigger. It is slightly hard to read! ~ Kristine T.
Hello Laurie! I just want to say you are a strong person to be able to handle the lovely busy bodies of 4 year olds lol! I worked with Pre-k and although I loved my babies a lot it takes a strong person to be able to handle a bunch of 4 year olds. I loved your overall color scheme it caught my eye and kept me wanting to see what was next! -Nijeeia Farland
Laurie! I taught pre-K too!! I think your pre-K background will prepare you for the classroom more than you might realize. I take lessons I think students will hate, and apply techniques I learned from dealing with the little ones. Just remember nothing can be worse that little ones after lunch and before nap time ;) I think you have a solid foundation.
