My Background
Thanks to my background in teaching dance to ages 2-8 years old at my prior dance studio and nannying kids ages 1-12 for the past 4 years I have gained a large amount of knowledge on how to work with kids but still have so much more to learn. What I have learned thus far is not all kids are the same; they all are at different levels mentally and physically despite being the same age. Patience is another key skill that I have learned throughout my experiences especially when working with younger kids. When I was teaching dance I learned how to make weekly lesson plans (basic level). I also have learned how to keep a class full of young kids active and engaged when teaching. I am confident in my current skills but still have so much I want to improve upon and learn more about.

My Story
My name is Hannah Cooper. I am a sophomore majoring in Elementary Education. I was Born and raised in VA Beach, Va. I came to ODU to stay close to home and save money! I am apart of Pi Beta Phi sorority, and currently hold the position of Director of Fraternity Heritage. If I had to describe myself in 3 words they would be kind, fun, and dedicated. I have a passion for helping others and being successful despite the challenges I may face. Growing up I didn't have the best home life. I lost my mom very young after her long battle with alcoholism and witnessed a lot for a child to see at my age. My teachers during that time were my support system. They were not just teaching me things I needed to know for school they were teaching me how to be strong & motivated despite everything going on in my home life. I am beyond grateful for the relationships I had with my teachers and would not be who I am today without them. They’ve inspired me to not only be a teacher, but to be the absolute best teacher that I can be.
What I have to learn
Although I have experience in teaching there is so much more that I need to learn and improve upon. I need to learn how to make proper and in depth lesson plans for my students, to give them the best kind of instruction and proper information. I need to learn how to be strict with my students but not coming off as too stern. I also need to learn how to integrate real world things into my lessons and stay up to date on the trends to keep my students engaged. Lastly I need to learn not to be so hard on myself when I have a bad day, I tend to think I have to be a perfect teacher sometime and there is no such thing.
The Teacher I will become
I will be a fun and active teacher who’s classroom is a safe space for her students to learn and be 100% their authentic selves. I will be understanding and encouraging to my students making sure they understand it is ok to have a hard time in a certain subject or activity. No one is perfect and with hard work and getting the help they need they will be successful. I will be a listening ear and a shoulder to cry on if need be, I believe support and kindness toward students brings out the best in them and in the end helps them succeed. On my own time I plan to attend conferences to better my teaching and to do research to stay updated on teaching styles for my students to give them my very best. If a guest were to walk into my classroom they would see students with desks in groups working together smiling. My classroom will be a positive environment full of students that will be leaders and have respect.
