Hi! My names Noah. I am 19 years old, and I plan on becoming a high school History teacher. I was born in Tampa, Florida to a military family while also being the oldest of three sons. My father was in the United States Marine Corps for 22 years an we have lived in 5 duty stations being Tampa, Florida; D.C.; Yuma, Arizona; and Okinawa, Japan. I lived in Okinawa twice for over 8 years and lived there the most important years of my life, so I consider Okinawa where I'm from. I am of mixed race, my mom being Creole and my father being African American and decent from the Bahamas. Living in another country has given me a very different perspective than most Americans. Many have not even left their hometown, which is crazy to me. It causes a lot of blindsided views of other regions and cultures, being both in and outside of the U.S.
I want to teach because of selfish reasons if I'm being honest. I hail from families with rich culture from French Louisiana Creole and the Caribbean with the Bahamas. However, I know nothing about these pasts. I could just ask my parents to go in depth about their families and lives, but they don't even know the full story. I want to be able to inspire high schoolers to learn different perspectives based on their family's past and where they're from. This will better allow them to navigate the reality that is the world.
I switched my major from Accounting to History hoping to be a teacher because I had a teacher in my past, Mr. Hayes that pushed me to do things that I didn't think I could. He taught biology and talked about his beliefs in atheism and how race doesn't exist, but even though I didn't agree with these things he still supported my and encouraged me to take the CLEP exam which I passed and allowed me to earn 6 college credits my freshman year of high school. I want to be a teacher and be able to inspire high schoolers like Mr. Hayes did for me.
I have unique experiences that give me different perspectives on life than most people. Living overseas has given me the opportunity to understand a plethora of different, people, communities and ideologies. I can help others to understand how to be more accepting and accommodating of other people. I can also explain the importance of different perspectives.
Like everyone else, I'm not perfect. I have issues with patience. I'm an older brother, almost 20 years old but I still find myself in argument with my 12 year old brother. I also am not sure how I would act in front of a group of teens if I had to go teach a class right now, so I will need practice. Making a lesson plan and having time management and staying on the topic of whatever I'll be teaching.
I plan to become a teacher that can give students someone that will encourage them to do great things. Someone that can inspire them to follow their passions and make decisions that are best for them and their futures. School should be a place of advancement and it should try to hinder the self expression of students. I will take a student centered approach, and they will learn from me existentially about the importance of perspective which I emphasize highly through including it with lessons about the past. I will prepare them for the world outside the barriers of school or hometown, and help them to be able to navigate our complex society. I would describe me as a teacher as a "sensei" and my students the "grasshoppers". I would be a wise mentor that will help them achieve a level of mastery of skills that will help them accomplish great things.
