My name is Miah Thomas. I am 19 years old and I attend Old Dominion University, this is my second semester at the university. I am from the Eastern Shore of Virginia. I am a freshmen here.
It did not take long for me to figure what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. Since I was a fourth grader I have always wanted to be a Math teacher. My inspiration to become a math teacher came from my own math teacher Mrs. Parks.
Before I became a student at Old Dominion, I worked at Subway for 3 years while also finishing high school. I went to Arcadia High School in Oak Hall Virginia. I was is in Color Guard for 5 years. I started in the seventh grade when it finally came back to the school. We did parades, football games and indoor competitions. While in high school I was trying to figure out if I really wanted to become a math teacher. I was ready to give up at one point but then I remembered what my grandmother said to me before she passed away, "Miah always follow your dreams, you will go far in life and make sure you enjoy your life the way you want" and that was to be a math teacher.
Not everyone learns the same way. I learn by being in person and by doing things hands on.
I know by being a teacher you will have to teach many different ways so that each student will understand. Students sometimes have hard times concentrating also while getting taught. Teachers are supposed to engage, explore, explain, elaborate and evaluate the students minds and work.
I believe that you can never learn to much. We learn everyday almost in many different ways.
One thing I need to learn is how to be able to teach prek-6 with passion and learn how to be a great roll model. I got the chance last semester to teach a sixth grade math class with a partner but I want to learn how to do it by myself and be good at it. I want to learn as much as possible.
I believe that the purpose of school is to educate, teach students basic knowledge and skills to get them ready for the future.
My students should be creative, respectful, and be able to have fun while learning. I will help them to learn and be able to solve problems by themselves. I want my students to grow through life and school as I teach them.
I will become a teacher that my students can come to me about anything. I want my students to know that I will be a friend to them. Teachers also have important jobs to protect students and educate them. I want to be a teacher everyone looks up to. Teachers have a hard job but it is how you teach and how the students make you feel that makes it easier. I will give my students rewards for what they do and learn.
HI Miah, I am glad you are going after your dreams and becoming a math teacher. Math is a tricky subject to teach and requires somone who enjoys it to really make a difference for children to grasp the concept. Your passion will lead you to become a great educator someday.-Jamiyah Sutton

Hey Miah, first off you have a beautiful name. Secondly, I am super proud of you for persevering and not giving up on your dreams of becoming a math teacher. I also strive to be a teacher where my students can come to me about anything. I feel it's very important to establish those relationships with your students. - Maya Lewis
Hi Miah! I think it's so cool that you were able to teach a class with a partner, I wish I had that opportunity. I am terrible at math and always have been, I can't imagine teaching just a math class. I also love that you want kids to have fun while learning, teaching math can be the least amount of fun for some students because it can be difficult. I'm sure that you're going to do great! -Danielle Enz
Hi Miah! I find it so interesting that you want to become a math teacher. Its also so great that you knew what you wanted to do and stuck with it! I loved how you mentioned that you want your students to be able to come to you about anything, that is my exact mind set. Respectful and acting their age, while still being able to come to me! Nice to meet you! - Bri Chavis
