Most of the Lions Cross Country team got to go to state in Missoula on October 22. The boys' team included the first-ever Lockwood senior, Kiowa Laverdure, junior Izayah-Lopez Widdicombe, sophomore Kenny Specht, and four freshmen: Mekhi Ladson, Ethan Baasch, Zane Muilenburg, and Lexyn Bouyer. The alternates were Beau Contreraz, a senior, and freshman Camden Oliscszak. The boys' team finished 14th at state, significantly better than last year's 21st place. They are hoping to improve before next year and get a higher placement.
The girls’ team didn’t have any seniors or juniors but was represented by two sophomores, Mareka Ball and Isabel Besel, two freshmen, Katelynn Green and Kylynn Stops, and one eighth-grader, Brooklynn Ladson. Unfortunately, one girl was injured, so the team didn't get a score. All the girls worked hard and ran hard Isabel and Brooklynn got their season-best run time at state.
When asked how the season went, head coach Katie Browning said, “We had many new athletes to the sport and other athletes that were new to the team. Despite all of the new faces, the team quickly learned how to work together and support one another to ensure that we all had a successful season. Most of our team is comprised of freshmen and sophomores, so we are looking forward to see how they grow and improve over the next few years.” This year the team had to go through some rough tracks from the Crow Invitational, where the athletes had to climb up the Gas Cap hill during the first part of the race, to the home meet, where they had to climb up the big hill behind the school.
