Drama in the Theater Department

This year marks the second year Lockwood has had a theater class. However, there has been a drama club at Lockwood for years. Mr. Staton, who is the Choir teacher at Lockwood, is also the teacher of the theater class and drama club teacher. The number of kids in it last year limited the lessons that the theater department could have. Covid also didn’t help with the problem. This year, however, there were so many kids that not only did the theater department get one entire class, it got two. The theater classes are made of three main things. First, of course, is acting, the students get a chance almost every day to try a different acting style and way in a safe and fun environment.

The second is the fun, during class, they act, they are “play” games that will help them get sharper with their acting skills. Taxi is quite a popular game there, and it is where four chairs are lined up like a car, and some are sitting in the driver’s seat. The driver “picks” and must take the person of the passenger. This game helps the student grow their fast thinking skills which will improve them, which can be pretty significant. If the scene got messed up, they could try to keep it going without it looking like there was a mistake. The third and final part of the theater is to get a little crazy. In theater, you must be able to go outside your box and get a little crazy. The theater can often be pretty loud, whether it be for acting purposes or just sitting in class. In another game that the kids in the theater play, everyone but one person lays on the ground, and the person goes around trying to make the people on the floor laugh. Once they laugh, they get up and help the person stand to make the people lying down laugh. The theater kids sure know how to have a good time. This year there will be four plays in total. Each class period will get 2 through the year. There is also talk of possibly a musical going on this year. Last year’s play from the beginning of the year the play was a mess of fairy tales. However, the next play was about murder, so who knows who they will put on next. For now, we will have to wait and see what the theater will have in store this year.
