With November comes the beginning of the winter sports season. Specifically, basketball, speech and debate, and wrestling all get started this month. Kicking things off was speech and debate, which officially started on November 1st. The head coach for speech and debate is Jared Smith. Speech and debate are two different topics, with speech having humorous and dramatic interpretation, impromptu, and original oratory. Debate has Lincoln-Douglas debate and public forum debate. Their first meet is in Sidney on November 19-20. On January 15th, Lockwood is co-hosting a tournament with Central in the Lockwood Middle School. Speech practices are Mondays and Wednesdays, and debate practices are Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Additionally, the Lockwood High School wrestling team season is going to start soon. Tryouts have already happened, and their season will begin on November 18th, as well as all of our other winter sports. The wrestling team will have both boys and girls, and they are all very excited. The coach will be Beau Malia, who said, “this year is going to be a good year.”
Last, but certainly not least, is the high school basketball season, which starts Thursday, November 18. The tryouts are 3 days starting on Thursday and ending on Saturday. On Saturday, November 20 we will get the results in the afternoon on who all made the team. There will be a froshmore team, made up of mostly 9-10 graders, and the varsity team is 10-12 graders. This year in Lockwood the grades only go to 11th grade so on the varsity team it’s mostly gonna be freshman and sophomores. Most basketball seasons typically last for 4 months. Most high schools start their season in November and end in March.
