The Lockwood wrestling teams got a chance at the beast that is the Class A Eastern Divisional tournament. Each competitor had an opportunity to get into state; however, some didn't get the chance, even though they fought hard to win.
If you have not had the chance to watch wrestling, let me tell you it gets aggressive fast. Many people were slammed into the ground and laid on a whole lot. Most of the Lockwood team had a chance to throw people and be the one who was thrown.
Wrestling is based on a point system where you try to end up with the most points or get a straight pin. You have a few choices to earn points: One way is to get the other person on the mat, and how you do it determines how many points you get. Another way to get points is to get out of the other person's move to you, which is called an escape.
Lockwood was well represented and advanced multiple competitors to the state tournament. Specifically, junior Beau Contreraz finished in 5th place, while fellow juniors Nathan Arthur and Jeff Kordonowy both placed 6th. Hesston Hinebauch, a sophomore, took 5th, freshman Anthony Morast took 4th, and Dalton Hinebauch, another freshman, was the top Lion, after earning a 2nd place finish.
For the girls, sophomore Kinley Crane, along with Hailey Unrein and Elisabeth Bieber, both freshmen, qualified for state.
Congratulations to everyone who fought the beast and got through, and good luck to those who advanced to the state tournament.
