Jake Bushnell was nominated by the sophomore class. He has been teaching science for two years, both at Lockwood High.
When asked why she voted for Mr. Bushnell, Ryleigh Doran said, “he makes sure there’s a lot of involvement with his class and has a lot of activities to do. He incorporates different types of learning so that everyone can grasp the subject. He also is involved with the students and makes his class a safe space and always checks on us to make sure we’re doing okay.” Spencer Hamrick added, “he is one of the kindest, most supportive teachers I’ve ever known. The love and care he holds for his students is evident in all that he does. He makes me want to be here every day.”
What do you love most about teaching?
“I love building connections and working with my students and watching them grow into incredible people.”
What do you love most about teaching science?
“Science covers so many different topics and disciplines that everyone can find something that interests them. I love how science lets my students ask the big ‘why’ and ‘what if…’ questions that keep them engaged and excited about how science impacts everyday life.”
Jing Olson was nominated by the junior class. She has been teaching math for ten years, the past three of which have been at Lockwood High where she teaches College Algebra, College Trigonometry, Algebra 2, and Honors Geometry.
When asked why she voted for Mrs. Olson, Andi Hinman said, “Because she is awesome and can really teach!” Matt Black added, “I’ve had her for three years, and think she’s a good teacher.”
What do you love most about teaching?
I love building relationships with students, love being there for both the struggles and celebrations of students. Most of all, I love my summers off :)
What do you love most about teaching math?
“Teaching has inspired me to be more creative with mathematics. I love coming up with different ways of teaching mathematics and love watching students problem-solve.”
Katie Browning was nominated by the freshman class. She has been teaching for three years and has been at Lockwood for all three of those years- one year in the middle school and two years in the high school.
When asked why he voted for Ms. Browning, Kenny Specht said, “Because she’s a good teacher!” Taysha LittleLight added, “She’s funny, fun to be around, and respectful.”
What do you love most about teaching?
“Getting to connect with my students and feeling like I can help them either with their academics or with other things as they come up.”
What do you love most about teaching English?
“That stories are a window to the perspective of people that are different from us. I love being able to encourage students to see life through a different lens.”
