Compared to most schools, Lockwood High School has a unique driver's education program. The first difference is that Lockwood offers it as a class during the school day. If students take this during the school day, they get the chance to get their license earlier, but they can also get credit as if it is a regular class. There is still a fee, just like if it was after school or in the summer; however, the price at Lockwood ($250) is lower than the other Billings-area schools.
The school has had three whole years of driver's education. The program first started for the now-juniors in the summer between their middle school and high school years.
With the school year nearing its end, the summer driver's education will soon be starting back up. To participate in this year's summer program, you will need to have been born on or before November 24, 2007 and will need to pay the $250 fee by May 6. If necessary, refunds will be issued by Wednesday, June 1. The schedule will have four days in May, the 24, 25, 26, and 31. June first and second, there will be classes, and just like in March, classes will run from 4:15 until 6:00 p.m. Once school is out, classes will go from June 7 on the weekdays from 8:00 till 10:00.
Classes will be held in the LHS seminar room, and there is a class limit of 36 students. Upper-level students and Lockwood residents will have priority, and the rest of the open spots will be determined with a lottery. Students are only allowed to miss three classes; however, they can be made up by making a schedule with an instructor. Sign-up sheets are in the high school's main office if you want to participate in the summer 2022 drivers education class.
