Once again spring sports have begun. The two sports that started on March 14 are softball and track and field. In order to participate, student-athletes will need to have everything on Dragonfly done (including a physical), the athletic handbook signed, and the concussion form completed. The fee for each sport will also need to be paid before they can start practicing.
Track and field is a demanding sport. It takes a lot of stamina and a will to thrive on running and achieving the tasks of track and field. The head coach of the Lockwood Track and Field team is Kate Browning. She has been coaching for three years now, but only two of actual competition due to Covid canceling the first season. Along with Coach Browning, there are 4 additional coaches; Roberta O’Connor, who will be coaching long jump and triple jump, Robert Tedlund (hurdles), Mike Spence (sprinting), Nycole LaRowe (shot put and javelin), and Lisa Skov will be coaching the high jump.
Those wishing to participate need to make sure to have the appropriate gear, including athletic shoes - not P.E. shoes because practices will be outside and you don't want to track mud into the gym. Participants will also need to have athletic clothes, which can be whatever you would normally wear for P.E (no shirts from rival high schools). Sweats or other cold-weather gear may be needed. The track is an outside sport, so be sure to dress for the weather. If you do not have your own, the team will give you sweats to wear.
For meets, cold gear under uniforms must be black, white, or silver and cannot have visible logos larger than two inches in diameter. Please let coach browning know if you need help acquiring any of these items.
The upcoming softball season will be ten weeks of hard work and dedication. Similar to track and field, this is the third year for the sport at Lockwood. The first year started great but was cut short due to Covid. The next was a year of firsts, and this year the team is hoping for more wins and more growth. There is only one team for softball. They will have a varsity schedule that will include going to divisionals and possibly even state.
The majority of the participants are juniors, with only two sophomores and four first-year students on a team of about 12. This year the team has three full-time coaches: Head coach Tyler Herbert, along with Greg Cook and his daughter serving as assistant coaches. There will also be two managers, including a return manager from last year, Madison LaFranier.
The team's first game, which is a jamboree tournament, will take place on Saturday, March 26 at Stewart Park. For those of you keeping up with Lockwood activities, you already know this is the same day as prom, but don’t worry, the girls on the team will still get to go to the dance. Games will end around 1:00 p.m., giving them enough time to get ready for prom.
