The third-year at Lockwood high school is finally here and with it new classes. This third year has been the most normal year so far that Lockwood has had since opening the new school in 2019. The first freshmen were in the garage and they didn’t even get to finish their school year when COVID-19 hit, the schools got shut down. The next year was all about keeping safe from Covid, some kids stayed home all year and the ones that did come had to wear masks almost all day long. Hopefully, this year, we can experience all the new classes they have set up for this year safely without any problems.
Mrs. Harper is a new teacher at Lockwood high school and is going to teach Plant and Animal Science. The class will teach the students how to be a consumer of food while also advocating for the agriculture industry. There is also a new class called Sports medicine in this class students learn about sport and everyday life injuries and how they can be rehabilitated. They understand the human body and how it functions before they can jump into more specific injuries. The class is taught by a P.E teacher who was already at Lockwood high school, Miss Keehn. There are many more new classes, including peer tutoring, business law, sports marketing, web design, Spanish 3, chemistry, Adv. metal and woods, ceramics, adv Art, drawing, Big brother/sister, and hope squad. There are many new classes for the upperclassmen like English 11th and college-level classes. There is also a new History class, U.S. History which is a requirement for juniors to take. It’s taught by Mr. Tedlund who moved up from the middle school. So far his class has been full of many different personalities from the students. The Students will be learning about the Constitution and Bill of Rights up till the current times. Mrs. Olson is the math teacher for Lockwood High School. She is teaching the very first dual enrollment class for Lockwood, it’s an M121 College Algebra. When asked about her new class she said, “Upon successfully completing this semester course (C or better), students will not only receive 0.5 high school math credit but also receive 3 college credits. This course meets the Mathematical requirement of the General Education Courses. Students must have an appropriate placement score, ACT/SAT score, or required GPA to be eligible. There are currently 19 juniors enrolled in this course. During this semester we will be covering topics on algebraic relationships, linear, quadratic, exponential, logarithmic, and rational functions and graphs that go beyond high school algebra. Moving forward with M121, students will have the opportunity to take M122 College Trigonometry in the spring. Both courses are prerequisites for Calculus. For students who pursue an engineering degree, Calculus I and II will be available next year. We will also offer the dual enrollment course Stat 216 next fall and spring to students who wish not to take Calculus.” With all these new classes and many more to come, we will have to wait to see how they go and where they grow.
