Thursday February 10th, the first day of the 2022 MHSA State All-Class Wrestling Tournament, was just for the girls. Lockwood had three competitors, Hailey Unrein, Elisabeth Beiber, and Kinley Crane, and while Unrein and Beiber each had two matches on day one, Crane had to wait until day two to wrestle.
Even though she fought hard, Unrein lost both of her matches, while Bieber lost her first match but won her second by pinning Kylie Baigent of Missoula Big Sky.
Bieber got a forfeit on the second day when her competitor, Emily Pedron from Glacier High, didn't show up. While she did get the Lockwood girls team 6 points, she soon did lose out on her 4th match when she got pinned. However, she wasn't the only girl at Lockwood to wrestle that day as Kinley Crane finally got her chance. This was her first-ever year wrestling; however, her time at state was short-lived when she got pinned twice.
The boy's bracket began on Friday, beginning with Lockwood's Anthony Morast, who only wrestled twice because even though he worked hard to win, he was still pinned by first Jaxson Sterling of Columbia Falls, followed by Ian Dillard of Ronan.
Next, Jeff Kordonowy won three points for his team when he won his second round by pinning Bradyn Rate of Frenchtown. He was pinned after fighting well for over two minutes in his other two matches.
In his first match, Nathan Arthur scored his team four points when he pinned Hamilton's Derrick Saltzman. However, even though he fought hard, he still got pinned in his last two matches against Havre's Kale VanCampen and Jaiden Gibson from Miles City.
Arthur wasn't the only one who got his team 4 points; Hesston Hinebauch got the points from pinning Brendyn Whiteman from Browning. Nathan Hansen from Frenchtown pinned Hesston in his first round.
Bryce Weidow from Corvallis pinned him in his third and final round.
Lockwood placed two at state; the first was Beau Contreraz, who scored 10 points. Beau lost on a decision in the first round, which means the other person got more points during the match. He then lost 8-7 to Dylan Delorme of Columbia Falls. Contreraz won in the second and fourth rounds by pinning Gunnar Larson of Stevensville and Gavin Bauman of Frenchtown. Beau did win his third, but it was by an 18-7 decision over Tyler Gilfry of Columbia Fall. He lost 11-1 to Hunter Barnes of Dillon in the fifth match when he won from a major decision, which is the same as a decision but with higher points. Beau's last match, which could have placed Beau 5th if he had won, was quite close, with Beau almost pinning Havre's Carson Harris several times, but Harris won by a point decision of 6-5. Losing that match meant that Beau got sixth place in the 120 pound weight class.
Hesston wasn't the only Hinebauch to wrestle at state; his brother Dalton also was there. Dalton got 15.5 points for the team. He got a bye in his first round, meaning he didn't have to wrestle. He then won on decision against Sheldon Rod from Glendive with the points at 9 to 2. Dalton lost his second match to a decision point difference of 6 to 2 against Ronan's Ridge Cote.
Dalton won his next match by a technical pin against Xavier Reatz from Libby/Troy. A technical pin or technical superiority is when one wrestler has so many points that they end the match. This makes sense because the points sat at 17 to 2. His final match was his placer match for 3rd against Ryder Hansen of Frenchtown when he won from a sudden victory 8-6. Sudden Victory is when the two opponents have the same amount of points, so they go into overtime. In this match, it was 6-6, so they went to overtime, where Dalton won by a takedown, which gave him the two points he needed. With this win, Dalton got Placed 3rd in Weight Class of 113 in State Class A.
Congratulations to those who went to state and ended the season off in such a great way.
