The Lockwood varsity cheerleading squad finally got a chance to stunt at the first volleyball home game on September 11th. Two different stunts were put up, a splits and some shoulder splits. Splits is where a flyer is sitting in a split with their legs on two bases shoulder. Shoulder sits are what they sound like flyers sit on a base's shoulders. They did the splits twice because at the game one of the two splits didn't go up. The squad only had about an hour to get the stunts together. Along with the stunt the girls also had to practice the dances and cheers that they did. The squad this year is full of new cheerleaders, so many girls were stunting for the first time ever. When asked about how the game went, varsity coach Lindsey Talmark said, "It was their first time stunting in a game this year and they were missing one-third of the team, but the team did great with what they had! Each year our cheerleading team has grown in numbers, and more cheerleaders means we can do bigger and better stunts! I am extremely excited to watch this team continue to grow!"
That game was over 2 weeks ago and the cheerleaders have already gotten so far with their stunting. Junior varsity has only stunted at two games so far but will be continuing to grow. At the volleyball game that took place on the 28th, some JV players joined varsity to add because varsity was short some girls and they did some stunts that were pretty simple but went up beautifully. Varsity has stunted at every game since that first game. They have already gotten up to a chair which is where a flyer sits on one base's hand while in the air over their head. They also got quite well on an overhead split which is where the flyer is splitting over the base's head compared to their shoulders. The team will continue to grow with not only their stunts but also with cheers and dances. We are excited to see how different the team will be at the end of the year.
