In her first year in Lockwood, Lindsey Harper will be teaching both Plant Science and Animal Science at the high school, as well as Intro to Agriculture at the middle school. When asked about what topics would be covered in Plant Science she said, "we will cover the basics of horticulture, crop science, soils, and floriculture." Horticulture is the study of plant science; growth and anatomy of plants, plant nutrients, and propagation (sowing seeds and transplanting plants). Floriculture is the study of flowers and flower arrangements. She also said, "we will be prepping for the greenhouses we are trying to get grants for. The greenhouses will be in the back of the school by the CTE building parking lot." Regarding Animal Science, Mrs. Harper said "this course will cover livestock growth and development, biosecurity for healthy livestock, ruminant, and nonruminants, handling livestock, anatomy of livestock, and livestock breeds. We will hatch chicks from eggs and raise them to sell or keep them for an FFA chicken coop, but the school would have to approve."
Although we are only a few weeks into the new school year, Mrs. Harper has had time to adjust and is loving her new classes. This is her seventh year as a teacher and she is excited to be teaching a subject Lockwood Schools has never had. She believes "students that take her classes are students who learn best with hands-on activities" and she hopes they will "develop skills they can use in the real world and in jobs right outside of high school." Not to mention her classes will be doing community service activities and projects.
