On Thursday, April 21st, the Lockwood speech and debate team wrapped up their season by feasting on a Nacho Libre-inspired taco bar and handing out awards and letters.
Everyone who went to state got a letter. A total of nine letters were handed out (Seth Ahlgren, Emily Brandenburg, Elizabeth Buckalew, Lily Conklin, Gwyn Cusak, Mayson James, Laira Larson, Nevaeh Lee and Emilee Shults), along with seven academic all-state certificates (Brandenburg, Buckalew, Conklin, Cusak, Larson, Lee and Shults). There were four other awards, including the Heart of the Team award, Speaker of the Year, and Debater of the Year.
The Debater of the Year went to two debaters - Neveah Lee and Mayson James - because they were a group and the only two debaters to make it through the whole year. Both Lee and James are sophomores in their first year of speech and debate.
Next up was the Speaker of the Year award, which unsurprisingly went to Gwyn Cusak, who advanced to the national tournament after placing first at the national qualifiers. Cusak is a junior, and this is her second year in speech and debate.

Lastly, the teammates decided the Heart of the Team award by voting for who they thought should win, and this year, the team selected Gywn Cusak for this distinguished honor.
It was a night of food and fun, but the job is not yet done. The LHS team is looking to raise money to pay for travel and lodging expenses for Gwyn Cusak to attend the National Speech and Debate tournament in Louisville, KY, this June. Gwyn took first place in Original Oratory at the National Qualifying tournament and will be representing Lockwood High and the entire state of Montana.
