Lockwood Public School's lunch program allows all studts to have free breakfast and lunch during the 2021-2022 school year. Last year, the Trump administration ordered free lunches for schools nationwide, and it was renewed again this year. Due to the new lunch policy, students are more willing to eat the school's breakfasts and lunches because they don't need to spend money on it anymore. According to Ruth Pentecost, Lockwood School’s general manager, an average of about 150 more students across campus started eating the school's food.
What do the kitchen staff think of this change? "I think it's a much-needed change," says Ashley McKinney, the kitchen manager of the intermediate school. "I hope that it stays this way." Ruth Pentecost agrees, adding, "more students are eating now because of this change." Because of the free lunch policy at Lockwood and other schools, students who weren't able to pay before can now enjoy the food at school. Most people think the change is for the better and they hope that it will stay for years to come.
