The floats were decorated, the staff and students were all decked out in red and black, and the band was warmed up and ready to play the school fight song. It seemed as though everyone was ready for the first Lockwood High School homecoming. Unfortunately, the weather had other plans.
In the early morning of Saturday, October 1st, LHS principal Gordon Klasna sent out a message to the entire Lockwood community announcing that the homecoming parade would be canceled due to poor weather conditions. This undoubtedly came as a shock to many, especially those who had spent the previous two weeks decorating parade floats. However, instead of all those float materials ending up in the closest dumpster, Mr. Klasna asked those who prepared decorations and banners to come and use those festive items to decorate the high school commons. So instead of the typical homecoming parade, Lockwood High found a way to spin what could have been a disaster into a unique way to celebrate our first-ever homecoming.
Although the parade was impacted by the weather, most of Saturday’s events were able to go on as planned. There was volleyball in the morning and football at night, followed by the student council-sponsored homecoming dance, which was held in the CTE gym and, by all accounts, was a rousing success. Over 300 students were in attendance to dance and socialize and see seniors Austin Bonebright and Gwyn Cusak crowned as homecoming king and queen.
