‘Home’ is people who love us

Nicholas Lee Kwan Hong (S1SK)

“The Boy, The Mole, The Fox, The Horse” is a short animated film that follows the story of a boy searching for a ‘home’. On his journey, he encounters a mole, a fox, and a horse. Together, they face challenges and share thoughts. Finally, when they find a town, a place initially called ‘home’, the boy decides to stay with his friends.

This film is filled with philosophical messages, yet it does not use any sophisticated language to convey its message. Each character also learns to overcome their fears and weaknesses. The mole, who was afraid of the fox, bravely walked towards the fox to untrap it. The fox, who would always maintain distance from the rest, learned to be closer to the people who loves it. The horse, who was insecure about his ability to fly, learned to accept itself no matter his indifference.

There are many great lessons to be learned throughout the film. In my opinion, the main theme of the film is ‘love’. We have to show people that they are loved, in order for them to love others, for them to face their fears, no matter their indifference. The final message in the film is my favourite.

‘Home’ is never a place or a building. ‘Home’ is people who love us.

Overall, it is an extremely wholesome animated film with important moral lessons. ■
