Jubilee 02/06/22

Danestone have been celebrating the Queen's platinum jubilee! On Wednesday, P6/7 and P7 helped make chocolate krispie treats for the whole school, we had fun working as a team doing different jobs like using the hob to melt the chocolate, dividing them into cases and decorating!

On Thursday, we went outside and joined the rest of the school for a picnic where we had some yummy treats (especially our chocolate krispies). We enjoyed some royal themed games such as Queens corners, drawbridge limbo and the royal waddle.

The Human Body

Our context this term is 'Our Healthy World' where we will be learning about the different systems in the body. The first system we have learned about is the digestive system. The pupils created these fantastic double page spreads with all the confirmation they learned.

Comprehension

Some of the pupils have been practicing using the point, evidence, explain (P.E.E.) method when answering comprehension questions. For this activity, we read an extract from 'Alice in Wonderland' and answered some questions, we highlighted each section of our answer so we could see clearly that we had included each area.

P6/7 Garden

Our garden has progressed lots over the last couple of weeks. We now have fruit trees, hanging baskets and some lovely decorations! The pupils have loved planting and maintaining their garden.

P6 Play Champions

Our Primary 6's have been taking part in the Play Champions program provided by Active Schools Aberdeen. The pupils were split into small groups where they learned how to lead others in playing games. This week they had their assessment were they had to show confidence by leading and demonstrating others on how to play their game. They all were fantastic and passed!

Sports Day 2022

We had lots of fun at sports day! We started the day with flat races and stations and in the afternoon we joined our castles for potted sports. We ended the day with an icicle whilst watching the castle relay race.

First Aid

Primary 6/7 took part in a first aid workshop provided by the The Red Cross. We learned how to keep ourselves safe, how top help someone who has broken their arm/leg, how to check for a pulse and if someone is breathing and how to put someone in the recovery position.

Padlet 7.3.22

P6/7 have loved using 'Padlet' for different aspects of their work. This week we used it as an 'exit ticket' to show what we had learned.

SuSTEMability 28.02.22

Mr Forman from North East Scotland College visited us for our SuSTEMability day. We created pneumatic truck from different materials. We learned how to be safe around hot glue guns for 'welding' the boxes together, we also used saws for cutting. P6/7 learned lots of new skills that they can apply when creating their competition entries.

The World Beyond 18.02.22

P6/7 have been reflecting on our learning throughout our topic. We thought about the activities that we have undertook, the skills needs and what our next steps are.

Enterprise Day 17.02.22

As part of our topic we had an enterprise day. The pupils were split into groups and had to design a product or service. They had to consider how much it would cost to make and sell, who their target audience was and even undertook some market research within the class to see how they could improve their design. Then, some pupils from each group pitched their idea to the rest of the class. Each pupil had '£20' that they could invest in 1 or more of the other ideas. There was lots of fantastic ideas including a pet camera, a parking app and a delivery drone!

Mandarin

We have had such great fun during out Mandarin lesson this week. We were taught some traditional Chinese ribbon dancing, dressed up in some Chinese dress and played some Chinese games. You can watch a video of our ribbon dance on SeeSaw.

Natural Disasters

As part of our topic 'Our World Beyond' we have been looking at natural disasters such as volcanoes, tsunamis and earthquakes. We have learned about tectonic plates and how they cause some natural disasters depending on how they move. We plotted the tectonic plates on a world map and discussed why some countries are more likely to experience earthquakes, tsunamis and volcanic eruptions. We have drawn cross-sections of volcanoes, designed earthquake-resistant buildings and created some mini tsunamis. We found out that it during a tsunami it is safer to be in high reinforced buildings or high ground rather than low land and small buildings.

Languages Week

We took part in lots of different activities for Languages Week. To start the week off we looked at some modern French artists and recreated a piece of their work and translated the materials we used into french. Next, we researched some traditional french food and created a French menu. To end the week we went on a scavenger hunt. Pupils had to find 12 hidden 'hello's' in different languages around the willow den. They had to guess which language we thought it was and then use Google Translate to find out the answer.

07.02.22 Buddies

P6/7 have been in the Willow Den reading to their buddies in P1/2. The pupils loved reading them stories about Chinese New Year.

Tomorrow's World

P6/7 have started their new topic 'Tomorrow's World'. We have 3 main areas that we are going to be looking at; Famous scientists and their inventions, coding and a STEM challenge. The class have been split into 8 groups with 2 groups focusing on one of the areas for 2 weeks then moving onto the next.

"Our STEM challenge is to create a contraption that will keep an egg safe when dropped from 3 metres. We have to choose materials with a budget of £5"

"We have been learning about algorithms which are a step-by-step guides for a computer. We then done some Minecraft coding on Hour of Code"

"We are researching famous scientists who have invented something that has changed our lives. My group chose Alexander Graham Bell who invented the Telephone."

11/11/21

Remembrance Day - P6/7 created 'blackout poetry' using the poem 'In Flanders Field'. They picked out words/phrases that flowed and made sense. They then blacked out the rest of the poem and created a background with images that related to the poem.

Reflective Reading and the Rights of the Child 8.9.21

P6/7 have been learning about Afghanistan and Malala Yousafzai. First we read a Newsround article about Malala. We found that Malala was shot on a bus going to school in Pakistan 20 years ago. Malala was sent to hospital for emergency treatment. Then she flew to Birmingham and she recovered.

Now she is campaigning for children's rights and girls to go to school. She wrote a book about her journey which we read. P6/7 made Google slides about her life, made posters and created art work linked to the Rights of the Child.

Blog by Keira & Harris, P6/7.

We created rights art work linked to what is happening in Afghanistan. We used words such as 'education' and 'voice' to represent the rights that the women and girls there deserve.

In Art, P6/7 created butterflies using poster paints to represent the 'freedom' that Malala felt from getting to leave Pakistan.

We looked at extracts from Malala's diary and discussed the importance of everyone having the right to education, the right to an opinion, the right to feel safe and the right to be protected from war and violence.

Emotion Works 27.08.21

Primary 6/7 are focusing on the orange cog (emotion words). We watched a clip that had two characters. There was no speaking so we had to use other clues to work out their emotions. The two characters had lots of different emotions. We drew 'Emotional Roller Coasters' and labelled all the emotions that we watched.
