3.1 Succession
Sthenelus became king of Anaxagoridae, succeeding Iphis, brother of his father Capaneus.
This was because his son Eteoclus, who was to succeed Iphis, died in the attack on Thebes led by Adrastus. [Apo.3.6.3]
3.2 Attack on Thebes
In 1205 BC, Sthenelus participated in the siege of Thebes led by Alcmaeon, son of Amphiaraus, and captured Thebes. [Paus.2.20.5]
3.3 Aetolia Campaign
In 1202 BC, Sthenelus participated in the Aetolia Campaign led by Diomedes, son of Tydeus. This was to avenge Diomedes' grandfather Oeneus, who had been exiled from Calydon in Aetolia. [Hygnius.175, Paus.2.25.2]
