< Anax, father of Asterius >
1 Origin
Anax was born in Samos in 1375 BC.
It is believed that Anax's father was one of the four sons of Ancaeus: Perilaus, Enudus, Samus, or Alitherses. [See Ancaeus, son of Acmon.]
2 Family
Anax had a son, Asterius. [Paus.1.35.6, Paus.7.2.5]
3 Others
In 1345 BC, Anax moved to the area near the Maeander River and founded Anactoria. [Paus.7.2.5, Pliny.5.31.1]
This was the land where Lelegeis, founded by Anax's grandfather Ancaeus, was located. [Pliny.5.31.1]
Ancaeus' father had left the mainland of Asia Minor, where the Hittites had power, and lived on an island, but Anax is thought to have moved to the mainland when he learned that the Hittites' power had weakened.
It is believed that Anax's brother or cousin Cleochus and Polemon assisted in the founding of Anactoria.
Afterwards, Polemon lived in Latmia, near Anactoria. [Diod.5.51.3]
