Lycus was born in Euboea (later Hyria) in Boeotia in 1415 BC.
Lycus' father was Hyrieus (or Chthonius), son of Megassares. [Paus.2.6.2, Apo.3.10.1, Hyginus.157]
Lycus' mother was Celaeno (or Clonia), daughter of Orchomenus. [Apo.3.5.2, Paus.9.5.4]

In 1390 BC, Lycus and his brother Nycteus emigrated from Hyria near Aulis to the foot of Mount Cithaeron and founded Hysiae. [FGrH.Nr333.F5, Strabo.9.2.12]
The reason for their migration is said to be the murder of Phlegyas, son of Dotis, but damage from a tsunami may also have been a factor. [Apo.3.5.5]
In 1370 BC, Polydorus, son of Cadmus, was killed by Pentheus, son of Agave. [Nonnus.5.190]
Since Labdacus, son of Polydorus, was young, Nycteus became his guardian. [Paus.2.6.2, Paus.9.5.4]
Nycteus was the father of Labdacus' mother, Nycteis.
In 1365 BC, Nycteus died in a battle with Epopeus. [Paus.2.6.2]
Lycus succeeded Nycteus as guardian of Labdacus. [Paus.9.5.5]
It is believed that Lycus moved from Hysiae to Cadmeia (later Thebes) around this time.
The Proetidian gate was later built close to where Lycus lived. [Paus.9.16.7]
In 1337 BC, Labdacus was killed and Lycus became guardian of Laius, son of Labdacus. [Apo.3.5.5, Paus.9.5.6]
