1 Origin

1237 BC, Alcmaeon was born in Argos.

Alcmaeon's father was Amphiaraus, son of Oecles (or Oicles, Oecleus). [Home.Od.15.220, Paus.2.20.5, Strabo.10.2.25]

Alcmaeon's mother was Eriphyle, daughter of Talaus. [Apo.3.7.5]

Alcmaeon married Alphesiboea (or Arsinoe), daughter of Phegeus. [Apo.3.7.5, Paus.8.24.8]

Alcmaeon and Alphesiboea had a son, Clytius. [Paus.6.17.6]

Alcmaeon married Manto (or Daphne), daughter of Tiresias. [Apo.3.7.7]

Alcmaeon and Manto had a son, Amphilochus. [Apo.3.7.7]

3 Others

3.1 Attack on Thebes

In 1205 BC, Alcmaeon led the Epigoni in an attack on Thebes and captured the city. [Apo.3.7.2, Diod.4.66.1]

Alcmaeon married Manto, daughter of Tiresias, who was among the captives. [Apo.3.7.7]

 

3.2 Expedition to Acarnania

In 1204 BC, Alcmaeon expeditioned to Acarnania at the request of the people of Thebes whom he had taken captive. He aimed for Illyria, where Eteocles' son Laodamas had settled, but on the way, some of the captives founded Astacus near the mouth of the Achelous River. [Estimated from Strabo.10.2.21]

After Alcmaeon sent the rest of the captives to Illyria, Alcmaeon and Amphilochus founded Argos (later Argos-Amphilochicum) near the Gulf of Ambracia. [Apo.3.7.7, Strabo.7.7.7, Strabo.10.2.25]

 

3.3 Marriage to Callirhoe

In 1202 BC, Alcmaeon married Callirhoe, daughter of Achelous. [Paus.8.24.9]

 

3.4 Death of Alcmaeon

It is said that Alcmaeon was killed in Phegia in Arcadia by Temenus and Axion, the sons of Phegeus, but this is probably a fiction. [Paus.8.24.7-10]
