< Niobe, daughter of Tantalus >
1 Origin
Niobe was born in Cydonia, Crete, in 1350 BC.
Niobe's father was Tantalus, son of Clymenus. [Apo.3.5.6, Diod.4.74.3, Paus.8.2.5]
2 Family
Niobe married Amphion, son of Antiope. [Apo.3.5.6, Paus.9.5.7]
Amphion and Niobe had sons: Sipylus, Eupinytus, Agenor (or Archenor), Phaedimus, Tantalus, Ismenus, and Damasichthon. [Apo.3.5.6, Hyginus.11]
Amphion and Niobe had a son, Amyclas. [Paus.2.21.9]
Amphion and Niobe had daughters Ethodaia (or Neaera), Cleodoxa (or Eudoxa), Astyoche (or Astycratia), Phthia, Pelopia, and Ogygia. [Apo.3.5.6, Hyginus.11]
Amphion and Niobe had a daughter Meliboea (or Chloris). [Apo.3.5.6, Diod.4.68.6, Hyginus.14, Paus.2.21.9]
3 Others
3.1 Migration to Olympia
In 1345 BC, Niobe emigrated from Cydonia to Olympia accompanied by her father. [Paus.5.8.1, Strabo.8.3.30]
3.2 Migration to the Troad
In 1344 BC, Niobe was accompanied by her father to migrate to the Troad near Mount Ida. [Paus.5.8.1]
3.3 Marriage to Amphion
In 1332 BC, Niobe married Amphion, son of Antiope. [Apo.3.5.6, Paus.9.5.7]
It is assumed that Niobe traveled via Samothrace to the sanctuary of Cabeiri near Thebes, where she met Amphion.
Amphion lived in Eutresis, near the sanctuary of Cabeiri. [Strabo.9.2.28]
3.4 Time of marriage
Strabo reports that Pelops married his sister Niobe to Amphion. [Strabo.8.4.4]
In Strabo's theory, Pelops was older than Niobe, and Niobe and Amphion married after Pelops immigrated to Greece.
However, if their marriage took place after 1315 BC, when Pelops appeared in Greece, this is not plausible, since Amphion would have married when he was over 50 years old and would have had many children with Niobe.
The number of children of Amphion and Niobe is reported as follows:
They had seven sons and seven daughters. [Apo.3.5.6]
They had ten sons and ten daughters. [Apo.3.5.6]
They had two sons and three daughters. [Apo.3.5.6]
They had six sons and six daughters. [Apo.3.5.6, Home.Il.24.596]
They had at least seven daughters, whose names were given to the gates of Thebes. [Hyginus.69]
From the above, it is assumed that Niobe was older than Pelops, and that Niobe and Amphion married before Pelops emigrated to Greece.
