< Hipponous, father of Capaneus >
1 Origin
Hipponous was born in Argos in 1265 BC.
2 Family
Hipponous married Astynome, daughter of Talaus. [Hyginus.70]
Hipponous and Astynome had a son, Capaneus. [Apo.3.6.3, Hyginus.70, Paus.9.8.7, 10.10.3]
3 Identity of Hipponous
There are two legends in which the name Hipponous appears, but neither of them is the father of Capaneus.
1) Hipponous, father of Periboea, mother of Tydeus
Hipponous lived in Olenus in Aetolia. [Apo.1.8.4]
Astynome, daughter of Talaus, was married to Olenus from Argos.
Aeolia, aunt of Talaus, father of Astynome, was married to Calydon in Aetolia. [Apo.1.7.7]
It is thought that Astynome married Olenus because of Aeolia, but Olenus and Calydon were enemies. [Apo.1.8.4]
Hipponous of Olenus and Hipponous, father of Capaneus, are therefore another person.
2) Hipponous, son of Adrastus
Hyginus reports that Adrastus and his son Hipponous committed self-immolation. [Hyginus.242]
Adrastus, the son of Talaus, died in Megara on the way back from the siege of Thebes in Epigoni, so he is a another person from Adrastus, the father of Hipponous. [Paus.1.43.1]
