Event: Al Gore: "shocking how the BBC has engaged in climate denial"
Credit: LBC
People:
- Al Gore: 45th Vice President of the United States, author of An Inconvenient Truth
- James O'Brien: Radio host, LBC
Al Gore: It's shocking how the BBC has engaged in climate denial, isn't it, I -
James O'Brien: You'd say that, would you?
Al Gore: Pardon me?
James O'Brien: You'd say that -
Al Gore: Well, I had a personal experience with it, this morning - it's really shocking.
James O'Brien: Because they would now bring on, I don't know, Nigel Lawson or somebody with no scientific training whatsoever. Although you're no scientist, yourself - your contention is that because we have a false equivalence -
Al Gore: Yeah.
James O'Brien: You're describing how bad tobacco is, to use your historical analogy - now you bring on someone dressed as a doctor to tell you that it's not. Do you see it that starkly, do you -
Al Gore: Yes absolutely, it's absolutely clear, absolutely.
James O'Brien: The science isn't unanimous, I mean, the figures are usually in the mid to - mid 90s, aren't they, usually -
Al Gore: Well, it's between 97 and 99 percent.
James O'Brien: And where does the 1-3 percent come from?
Al Gore: Um...
James O'Brien: The scientists who say that you're wrong.
Al Gore: Well, that's a de minimus number -
James O'Brien: Yes.
Al Gore: - and you're always going to have something like that. If you had - if you had chest pains, and they increased and you were somehow able to consult with the 100 leading heart specialists in the world, and 97 of them said "Oh my gosh, you need to take this medicine, you need to change your diet, you need to make these other changes", would you wait to find two or three who said "No, everything's fine, don't worry about it".
