Troyes, Dec. 26. - The Seine and the Aube are rising rapidly. The inhabitants of the Mathaux quarter have been obliged to evacuate their dwellings.

Nancy. France, Dec. 26. - The floods are subsiding as rapidly as they rose. The damage is estimated at more than ten million francs. Most of the metal and other industrial plants ceased operation. Railroad communication is partially interrupted, large portions of the track north of the city having been washed away.

Colmar, Alsace, Dec. 26. - The plain between the Rhine and the railroad from Mulhausen to Schlestadt is one vast sheet of water. The inhabitants of many villages in the valley have been driven from their homes. At St Crox a number of houses have been swept away and several persons injured.

Event: "The fact that the Martian canals exist is no longer doubted..."

Credit: The Winnipeg Evening Tribune, h/t Tony Heller

THE WINNIPEG EVENING TRIBUNE - OCT 04, 1919

The fact that the Martian canals exist is no longer doubted, even by the most religious astronomer. Furthermore, the remarkable fact of the Martian canals is that the great majority of them run north and south, bringing the water from the north or south, depending upon the season. In one season the waters run south, climb up over the equator and run north. The same thing occurs the next season in a reverse manner. No one doubts today that these canals are parts of an enormous irrigation system which supplies water to the desert inlands. We do not see the actual canals, but the straight lines which we see are simply evidences of vegetation on each side of the banks of the canal which have their origin in the water of these very canals.

Event: Inconvenience and loss caused by "recent floods in the Thames Valley"

Credit: The Daily News, Trove (National Library of Australia)

THE DAILY NEWS - JUN 26, 1919

RECORD FLOODS

Though considerable inconvenience and loss has been caused by the recent floods in the Thames Valley, the destruction cannot be compared with that wrought in East Anglia in the autumn of 1912. Seven million pounds was given as the cost of this visitation. One hundred thousand people were driven from their homes, thousands of cattle and sheep were drowned, and more than fifty bridges destroyed.

The great Paris flood of 1910, again, did damage to the amount of £60,000,000: but the worst disaster of the kind on record occurred in China in 1887, when the Yellow River overflowed, drowning 5,000,000 people, and destroying more than 1,500 towns and villages.

Event: Floods in Europe: "Scores of villages in Tuscany are submerged"

Credit: The Australasian, Trove (National Library of Australia)

THE AUSTRALASIAN - JAN 18, 1919

FLOODS IN EUROPE

Scores of villages in Tuscany are submerged by the floods in the Arno and other Italian rivers. Tovemboli [Empoli?] is isolated and the waters threaten to engulf Pisa. Large forces of soldiers are toiling to avert the catastrophe. The telegraph and railway services are interrupted. A considerable number of casualties have occurred. The Tiber has risen 50ft., and is deluging the suburbs of Rome to the depth of 12ft. A heavy snowstorm which is causing avalanches in the hills has aggravated the situation. The continued rise in the waters of the Seine, owing to floods, is causing grave anxiety in Paris, where it is feared that the food supplies to the city will be interrupted. The Thames is rising to a dangerous extent in many parts owing to heavy snow storms and continued rains in the upper valley of the river.

The quays and suburbs of Paris are under water and navigation has almost ceased. Despatches from the provinces report that streams there are constantly rising. The Rhone is over its banks and the plains in the Avignon region are inundated. The rainfall is continuing.
