Interest statement
From childhood, I have considered empathy an important attribute. I was raised in a family circle who taught me the importance of being a “helper” and positively affecting others. I firmly believe that empathy can thrive in us as humans.
This led me to my field of study and profession, namely community health education. My current professional roles lend to interaction with students from various health-related academic programs, such as medicine, public health, and dietetics. During these interactions, I strive to help them understand the importance of implementing empathy into their personal and professional roles.
As a student training in education, my research interest is implementing empathy training into the undergraduate community health curriculum. Although there is a great deal of literature regarding empathy and medicine,
I would like to extend that to include other health professions and the impact on communities. Not only do I look forward to contributing to this program, I also hope to take away ideas that can be employed into my teaching and mentoring roles.
