Why are you interested in taking part in developing this Empathy Training?I am a psychiatrist working with adults and adolescents with severe mental illness and substance use disorders. I have training in CBT, psychodynamic psychotherapy, and mindfulness-based interventions. I teach medical students and residents and am looking for a simple way to teach empathic listening skills to these trainees.
What does a vision of a culture of empathy look like to you?
A culture of empathy at a working level would mean everyone comes to the group prepared to seek understanding and avoid our tribal natures to differentiate ourselves based on some instinctual, quick, assessments by which we group people -- finding common ground in our humanity.
Not sure it’s natural.. Tribalism may be natural.
What is your favorite empathy roadblock and why?
I use so many of them. My most commonly used ones are advising and persuading.
