TITLE: Question on Arrival

BY Edwin Rutsch

DESCRIPTION

Create a list of questions for participants to write about as they arrive in the meeting.

OBJECTIVES

  • This gives participants something to occupy themselves with when they first arrive. Otherwise there can be awkwardness about what to talk about.

  • Gives a time period for people to arrive and get settled in. People arrived 5 minutes early and 5 minutes late and this is a way to effectively use that arrival time.

  • It is something to keep participants productively occupied while we wait for everyone to arrive.

  • This is a productive exercise to generate, gather and document useful information about the participant. This information can be used in to develop the training. We are gathering useful information for improving the training.

  • Gives a introduction topic for everyone to share at the beginning of the meeting.

  • We can test if participants can write in the share google doc.

CHAPTER QUESTIONS

Create a list of question that relates to the chapter we are reading. Asking questions on the chapter would stimulate ideas for the discussion and get the ideas written down so that we could collect them to expand on the chapter.

How would you like to contribute to the MOOC design Project?

( ) What are the categories of contribution?

( ) How many hours per week?__________

( ) Design Activities.

ARRIVAL QUESTIONS?

What questions would you ask for the 'On Arrival Question' and why would you ask these?

Why this Question?

We want to hear from participants what questions they would ask.

Culture of Empathy (COE)

These are questions related to a culture of empathy.

COE: WHY IMPORTANT?

Why is building a culture of empathy important to you?

COE: VISON?

What does a vision of a culture of empathy look like to you?

Why this Question?

Or core vision is to build a culture of empathy. We would like to paint the picture of what that vision would be like.

COE: MEANS?

What does a culture of empathy mean to you?

Why this Question?

The overall intention and vision of the training is building a culture of empathy. It would create clarity to know what participants feel this means. What are the qualities of this vision.

We need to ask this question for several reasons:

Empathy supersedes all adversarial actions

It is a long-lasting way of being

It is building as opposed to breaking down relationships

It focuses on the wholeness of the speaker and the listener

CIRCLE EXPERIENCE?

What have you experienced while listening to others in our circle?

Ie. Can you recall and share some feelings that came up?

Problems Solve

What are one or two personal and/or social problems that you feel empathy can solve, and why?

What skills in particular do you want to hone?

The purpose of these questions is to help people clarify for themselves what practical outcome they hope to see in their lives

  • If you are able to sharpen that skill, which need of yours will this skill serve?

  • Where will you use it?

  • How will your life be different with this polished skill?

  • What possibilities can you see in your world once you have integrated the said skill?

What feelings do you want to experience by taking part in the Empathy Training Design Team?

Why this Question?

Empathy is about an awareness, sensitivity and understanding of felt experience in self, others , groups and in relationships. Let's find out what feelings people are desiring to experience in working on this project in our teams.

How do you feel right now?

Why this Question?

Empathy means feeling into. So a core part of empathy is awareness and sensitivity to felt experience. Be it of oneself, others, or the broader surroundings and culture. Therefore to build a culture of empathy, it helps to become more aware of one's own feelings as well as be able to express them and for them to be heard, seen and acknowledged. Also for the team to be more aware of everyone else feelings in the group.

How do you envision the training fitting your life?

Why this Question?

The question can help people to clarify how they want to bring what they are going to learn to their daily life. The idea behind is to make people think about how to bring the materials and exercises in real life context. (and not let the materials getting dusty and forgotten)

What are your objectives with the curriculum?

    • What are the goals?

    • How will you track your progress?

    • How will see changes?

    • Having goals help to be clear about the learning curve.

What would you like to have learned at the end of the curriculum?

    • What specific skills are you looking for to improve?

What feelings did you experience in today's meeting?

Why this Question?

At the end of the meeting, check in with everyone and ask how the meeting felt to them.

What are your expectations, concerns, wishes for this meeting?

Why this Question?

How are you feeling in the here and now? Are you sitting ok? Anything you need to let us know or that you want to share before we begin?

    • Giving reasons as well as giving questions still is valuable & constructive and meet the need to answer the question: Why?

    • Excited to have an option to fill the time while people are early/late and to help some ideas to surface + writing down

    • Roll my eyes - what is going on but recognize it’s useful and helpful

    • Find it engaging

    • Questions are very big.Maybe send them in advance for time to reflect? Maybe an hour before?

    • As a way to settle in.

    • Every time are different questions

    • Ask at the end of the meeting for the next week questions to use.

    • Have a big general question and a short question related to the chapter.(focused on the learning related to the chapter)
