On Arrival Question
1. Chapter question: What is your favorite empathy roadblock and why?
2. General question: What does a culture of empathy mean to you?
Pauline
Chapter question fav roadblock - assuming someone knows more than I do, has more experience/skills/qualifications ( projection)
2. General question: (culture of empathy?) a culture where people focus more on listening than on talking/telling and where we value multiple perspectives
Debate to dialogue , Listening
Edwin
1. Chapter question: (favorite roadblock?) Detachment: Somehow detaching has been a way to deal with some issues. I feel that if I detach I can see a problem from the outside and will have more clarity about it. However, I find myself withdrawing from situations which does not feel good.
2. General question: (culture of empathy?) It’s an overall vision of what a culture or society based on empathy looks like. It’s based on mutual presence, inclusion, power with, listening, constructive dialogue, empathic connection and collaborative action for the well being of all.
What are we moving towards. Being present. Awareness and well being of a whole.
Rita
1. Chapter question: (favorite roadblock?)
One roadblock described by Miller is WARNING.
While I love them all, this one is a sympathetic reflex I easily indulge in and with….. Really, it is for your good. I know what is good for you and I want to protect you….:) So easy to use this roadblock.
2. General question: (culture of empathy?)
A culture of empathy is a culture where everyone is liberated from analysing and finding faults with themselves and others.
Instead, we naturally switched to caring about each others needs. In a culture of empathy, we can be ourselves because we accept each other as long as we each respect each other's needs. When we fail to accomplish this, we get together, discuss and come up with a way to deal with the situation which gives closure to each, integration of the needs of everyone.
Relationships are lighter, caring and collaborative
Jessica
1. Chapter question: (favorite roadblock?)
Only one??? :-) I have 3 favorites depending on my mood. When I want someone to like me, I want to over agree. Also, I love probing, I am very curious my nature and I have a craving to understand fully so I tend to ask lots of questions to gather information on the person and the situation. Last one, when I am in a mood where I feel insecure, I want to overcompensate by advising.
2. General question: (culture of empathy?)
I think a world that SLOWS DOWN. I think it’s a culture where we are raising our awareness and our intentions on how we want to interact and be in the world. No more being busy with unimportant tasks. Empathy is a choice. Society based on empathy looks more caring, connected to each others, less judgemental, more curious of our differences, less afraid to speak up about our pain and sorrows.
