would like to learn more about the teams you form and how i could participate in this initiative. I live in Greece and my studies are on empathy and literature.
I read a message yesterday about us writing a report after our meetings and I really liked the idea. Actually, I was thinking to suggest that we keep a kind of short empathy diary where every week in 10 lines we write down and share with our group what was the new thing we realized this week, or anything that seriously attracted our attention. Hm.. we could also create a blog for this purpose and others could read our short diaries as well.
Also, I saw that you have mentioned the projects each one of us is working on. Could we add some more details regarding my project?
My project will be on how we integrate empathic listening in the digital classroom or any reference to my studies once my MA is exactly in Digital teaching and empathy?
I would love to find people who do something similar in their classroom -online or not- and maybe a more detailed description of my academic past and my current studying will show better what I am planning to do.
Design lesson: Discuss social problems like loneliness.
I would like to design sessions where we'll work on empathy in conjunction with social problems like loneliness.
I think that only Lisa has studied empathy in relation to teaching but she dropped out. Do you think I could contact her? Have you heard from her after the last time we met all together?
Design Exercise: Role Play a Conflict.
We practice empathic listening which is awesome. However what if we simulate a real disagreement? For example, we act out that two people- might be group members- have a conflict. In one case a mediator tries to help them reach an agreement while in the other, the two participants without any mediator, try to solve their differences. By doing this, we' ll have a hands-on experience of how empathic listening works in real life situations.

Why are you interested in taking part in developing this Empathy Training?
I am particularly interested because Empathy is closey connected to both my professional and academic life. As a teacher, I believe that empathy can help students trust their teacher and open up themselves to them while in my academic life what I am studying is the role of empathy in the digital classroom. What is more, in a personal level, I think that empathy is a sine qua non element without which we cannot build long-lasting and meaningful relationship with others.
What are personal and/or social problems that you feel empathy can solve, and why?
I think that relationship problems like poor communication, misunderstandings, emotional violence
What does a vision of a culture of empathy look like to you?
It looks like an oasis in a world that seems to lose part of its humanity. I think that this vision will answer to many people’s need for deeper connection and warmer relationships with others. We all need it; especially today after reading about compassion on chapter 4 of the book we use in our meetings, I felt how much better people could communicate and connect with each other if they had ever heard and practise genuine empathy and compassion in their life. The vision of a culture of empathy is the fresh water in the thirsty heart of multiple people all around the world.
Empathy is meaningful and very serious. People feel a gap inside them. Would be happy to contribute and make the world better. Being the best means you are authentic.
What is your favorite empathy roadblock and why?
Dimitra
Mainly warning and advising i think..
What questions do you have about the empathy training project and MOOC?
Would like to know the concerns of others?
Will go with the 16 week training and come up feedback once we have done it. Trial and error. Try it and get feedback. Try it and get feedback.
Look at problem areas. That are not to difficult.

==============
I am so happy to see the Empathy project to improve week after week with new ideas and exercices coming on, i am really delighted about it!🎈
Once you asked at some points are comments on these activities in google doc I think we could add a section where participats will write down how they would react if things go wrong at the tent they might try to tent.
What if we could write a hypothetical scenario like "how would you react if people start shouting that nobody cares about empathy when there are so many homeless people, we need jobs etc."
By doing something like this i think all of us will have the opportunity to prepare ourselves for incidents of this kind, reflect, share our views and express our worries in a more creative way. I thought about it after our discussion with Stephan last Monday. Many people might be afraid to take the first step and talk publicly about empathy for the fear of things might go wrong. I wanted to discuss it with you first before adding my comment to the google doc.
Also, I am sending you this video here which a documentary about Americans. Close to the end of it, there is a comment which suggests that in the States it is more difficult to change the situation of poor empathy and make people more caring than keeping things the way they are. I would love to discuss this with all of you this Monday but before that, and if you allow me, i would like to share it with you. I see the States from a European perspective but i would like to have your take on this. Do you think that this short video depicts the reality of your society?

and thank you for this amazing initiative of yours on empathy!

Hi Dimitra
Design and facilitate a role plays activity
Doing role plays for difficult situations the may come up in the empathy tent or other places is a good exercise., If you would like, you could start designing a role play like that for the Tool Kit?You can use and build on the template here. https://sites.google.com/site/listeningwellbook/tool-kit
Design and facilitate a ‘Fear of doing empathy wrong ‘ activity
“Many people might be afraid to take the first step and talk publicly about empathy for the fear of things might go wrong.” Would you like to design and activity around addressing those fears?
Design and facilitate a 2 hr. Lesson around social problems.
The video is good as well..It helps articulate the problems we are facing in the US and the world. Perhaps we could design some Lessons around videos like this that explain the social problems. We view the video, then do a empathy circle lesson about it. Would you like to design a lesson around this?
Yes, let’s discuss at the next meeting as well and see what we can design around this.
I am glad to know that you found the video thoughtful. It is part of the material i use in my language classes so to keep my students engaged into meaningful social discussions. Do you think we could discuss it on Monday? What if instead of talking about whatever we had a topic based on a different video each time like the one i shared with you? Or anything else?
Yes, I would like to design some classes and even collaborate with our team members on that. I will need time though because I am working on my assignments for the university this month but your idea is wonderful!
Also, regarding animations, i had seen these videos and you are right to think that a video could put our ideas forward in a more effective and engaging way. If some art students could join us, that would be wonderful!
About the writer of the book and the discussion we could have with him, i think that we could start viewing empathy from different angles. For example,
how does he sees empathy in education or medicine or in the hot issue of refugees.
Why he chooses empathy over compassion?
We could brainstorm, write down our ideas and make a list of things we would like to ask him. The more i read his book, the more I enjoy it!
