Chapter 5 question: Favorite BlockThis question is on Chapter 5, Roadblocks to Empathy.
What is your favorite empathy roadblock and why?
Edwin
Detachment: Somehow detaching has been a way to deal with some issues. I feel that if I detach I can see a problem from the outside and will have more clarity about it. However, I find myself withdrawing from situations which does not feel good.
Dimitra
Mainly warning and advising i think..
Stephan
I use so many of them. My most commonly used ones are advising and persuading.
Ingrid
There are a few that I tend to use more often but I am getting much better now at recognizing when I use them: Analyzing, Judging, and Advising
I also use Agreeing but I am not always as quick to catch myself doing.
Rita
Warning: One roadblock described by Miller is WARNING.
While I love them all, this one is a sympathetic reflex I easily indulge in and with…..
"Really, it is for your good. I know what is good for you and I want to protect you….:) "
So easy to use this roadblock.
Jessica
Only one??? :-) I have 3 favorites depending on my mood.
Agreement. When I want someone to like me, I want to over agree.
Probing: Also, I love probing, I am very curious my nature and I have a craving to understand fully so I tend to ask lots of questions to gather information on the person and the situation.
Advising: Last one, when I am in a mood where I feel insecure, I want to overcompensate by advising.
Pauline
Projection: assuming someone knows more than I do, has more experience/skills/qualifications (projection)
