Dear Maureen, I’m Pete Baklinski, and this is your Canadian Pro-Life News Bits – where I let you know what’s happening on our country’s pro-life and pro-family front.
The news this week on the life and family front has been more on the quiet side — which is nice for a change. Still, there are a few important stories to bring to your attention.
LifeSiteNews has picked up the story I shared last week about a mother from Nova Scotia who almost bled to death after taking the abortion pill. These stories are becoming more and more common as the deadly abortion pill becomes the most used method for ending the lives of the preborn.
The Quebec Life Coalition is ramping up its fight against the province’s proposed constitution that would tragically enshrine the “freedom” to abortion. Check out what boots-on-the-ground pro-life activism looks like in Quebec.
A Canadian doctor from B.C. has written about the sad reality of a Catholic hospital having a euthanasia killing centre on site. Dr. Yuriko Ryan writes that the Catholic hospital no longer provides an unwavering witness to the dignity of life. It’s a sobering piece that shows what happens when institutions betray their healing mission and become dealers of death.
Another Canadian teen has come forward with a horrific story about how she was pushed into mutilating surgery in an attempt to “change” her into a boy. Rose Guerin-Test was 13 when doctors put her on puberty blockers. At 16, they performed a double mastectomy. Rose’s life turned upside down, and everything fell apart. She realized that she had been pushed into a huge mistake. She is now speaking out to prevent others from making the same mistake she made.
There’s a beautiful must-see video of the week. When a pregnant woman overdosed and nearly died, her doctor worked to save both mother and child. The baby was born with many problems. Later, pregnancy center director Angie Odom adopted this same baby, Bella Hope, and became living proof of what it truly means to love them both. It’s a heartwarming story.
Finally, don’t miss my reflection at the end, which tells the beautiful story of a Canadian mother who suffered a heart attack while pregnant and had to fight for her baby. The story shows what can happen when a pregnant mother and her doctors decide to fight for both mother and child.

Catholic Medical Association: Built to Coerce: Canada’s Living Laboratory of Euthanasia and the Call to Catholic Witness

Must-see video of the week
A powerful real-life witness to the pro-life message, pregnancy center director Angie Odom lived the slogan “love them both” by adopting Bella Hope—the baby of a former client who overdosed while pregnant—and raising her as her own after saving both mother and child.

Maureen, at 23 weeks pregnant, Canadian mom Julia Morris suffered a massive heart attack—a terrifying moment that could have ended both her life and that of her preborn son, Johnny.
Doctors discovered a nine-centimetre benign tumour in her heart that was threatening to kill her. To survive, she needed open-heart surgery — but the procedure carried a serious risk of triggering premature labour. Julia was told she could terminate her pregnancy. She refused.
“I knew it wasn’t the right choice for us,” Julia said, as reported by The Globe and Mail on Oct. 21, 2025. “I had this really strong, strong feeling that Johnny was just a strong baby.”
Her team of doctors at Kingston Health Sciences Centre — cardiac surgeon Dr. Holly Mewhort and maternal-fetal medicine specialist Dr. Jonathan Ausman — faced an extraordinary challenge: to save two patients at once. They carefully planned and executed what is believed to be the first open-heart surgery in Canada ever performed on a mother in her second trimester.
Over six tense hours in the operating room, more than a dozen medical professionals worked together to remove the tumour while monitoring Johnny’s tiny heartbeat. When his heart rate dropped, they adjusted immediately. Against all odds, both mother and child made it through.
Months later, Julia safely gave birth via C-section to a healthy baby boy. “When I held Johnny for the first time,” she said, “I was overwhelmed with relief. My baby was here. He was safe.”
Today, Julia is back home, hiking again with her newborn tucked close to her chest—living proof that real medicine saves lives.
As affirmed by the Dublin Declaration on Maternal Healthcare, signed by over 1,000 doctors, Abortion is never medically necessary to save the life of the mother.
True healthcare always loves and cares for them both—mother and baby.
Julia's story shows exactly what this looks like.
Be bold and daring for life!
