Dear Maureen, I’m Pete Baklinski, and this is your Canadian Pro-Life News Bits – where I let you know what’s happening on our country’s pro-life and pro-family front.
Canadian pro-life heroine Linda Gibbons was arrested last week in front of the Toronto Abortion Clinic. The 76-year-old Christian grandmother was charged with “obstruction.” She was jailed at the Vanier Center for Women in Milton, Ontario. She has a court appearance scheduled for Feb. 26. Please pray for this courageous and heroic woman.
Quebec has now passed the one-million mark in the number of abortions. Abortion has resulted in 1,055,000 missing Quebec children since 1969. Quebec, once upon a time, was a God-fearing province. It was responsible for the spread of the Christian faith across Canada. Abortion and contraception have now gutted the province, leaving it a demographic and moral wasteland. With a fertility rate of 1.36, the lowest on record, the province is now plummeting toward extinction. This is the cost of rejecting life.
The National Post ran an important story by a Canadian academic who convincingly demonstrates that Canada's euthanasia law was not a slippery slope, but a cliff. This month marks 10 years since the Supreme Court ruled in favour of allowing doctors to kill patients as a solution to suffering and pain. The article is a sobering read about how far our country has fallen in 10 short years.
This week’s must-see video shows Lila Rose, founder and president of Live Action, debating Dr. Mary Anne Franks, a George Washington University Law School Civil Rights professor, on abortion and the responsibility of legal systems to uphold fundamental rights. Lila, as usual, is stunning. Watch this to learn how to make the most compelling pro-life arguments.
Finally, don’t miss my reflection at the end about US President Trump’s executive order to expand access to IVF and why no pro-life advocate can support this.

Pro-life Canadian Man
This news is all the more disturbing in light of the vast number of important victories Trump has given the pro-life movement in his first month of office.
IVF is evil for many reasons.
Persons deserve to be co-created by a man and woman through an act of love, just as God calls each person into being through an act of love. The love between a husband and wife in the marital embrace that co-creates a new person imitates God’s own act of love in creating that person. Persons are meant to be called into being through love. A person has the natural right to be conceived by means of the loving embrace of his or her parents. Creating a personal being in a test tube by force is an offence against that person.
IVF furthermore reduces persons to commodities which can be bought and sold. This is a grave evil against the human person.
Another evil connected to IVF is the use of masturbation to collect the man’s sperm.
Tangential to the problem of the commodification of the person is that since in IVF fertilization takes place outside of the body of the woman, a mother and father have no way of knowing if the newly conceived child implanted back into the woman’s body is really their offspring.
The Associated Press reported on a heartbreaking story this week of a woman who went through IVF only to have the wrong child implanted in her. She knew something was wrong when she, as a white woman, gave birth to a black child. When she told the fertility clinic about the problem, they tracked down the biological parents, who then successfully sued for custody of the child. The woman was forced to give up the child whom she had already been nursing for 5 months.
The woman’s lesson is sobering: “Never once did I consider I might birth someone else’s child and have them taken from me,” she said. “And I feel like that should be something that women are aware of as an actual possibility.”
This goes to show the nightmare that can unfold when we mess with God’s order and design for human reproduction.
Finally, another grave evil connected to IVF is the fact that multiple human beings are created in each IVF procedure. Only one or two are selected to be implanted in the mother’s womb. The rest are either frozen or discarded. The price of every successful IVF procedure is the indeterminate fate or death of some 10-20 tiny human beings.
As moral theologian E. Christian Brugger points out: “IVF clinics are places of unspeakable evil. Although embryos are tiny, easily manipulated and bloodlessly killed, don’t let appearances fool you. These businesses are homicide factories.”
But what does this mean for children created by IVF? They are children of God, just like everyone else. They are in no way evil, just as children conceived in adultery, fornication, or rape are not evil. Children conceived by evil means are an example of how God can work all things, including evil acts, for good. And, just as no one would ever defend adultery, fornication, or rape because the good of children may result from these acts, so too, no one should ever defend IVF because of the good of children that comes from it.
In the end, the entire IVF process is wrought with numerous evils. Pro-life advocates must unequivocally oppose IVF because it's an immoral way of bringing new life into the world. It must be banned. We have to pray that President Trump sees the light on this grave evil.
Be bold and daring for life!
