Dear Maureen, I’m Pete Baklinski, and this is your Canadian Pro-Life News Bits – where I let you know what’s happening on our country’s pro-life and pro-family front.
Canadian pro-life heroine Linda Gibbons was on trial this week for her February arrest in front of a Toronto-area abortion mill. Campaign Life Coalition staff were present in the courtroom as an abortion employee took the stand to denounce Linda and her peaceful witness to life. We are following Linda’s case closely and will provide you with exclusive updates. Day two of Linda’s trial resumes on May 27.
Quebec’s March for Life is happening next week on Saturday, May 31. It's an essential event for all pro-life advocates in Quebec. If you live nearby, please attend.
My colleague David Cooke spoke to Catholic News Agency about Prime Minister Carney abolishing a government ministry for disabled citizens when he unveiled his new cabinet last week. Check out David’s powerful criticism of this.
June is coming, and that means we’re involved in defending Catholic schools from LGBT activism. Check out our story on our third annual National “Pride” Flag Walk-Out Day.
I’m sad to announce that our country’s top court has refused to review the case of Toronto Catholic District School Board trustee Mike Del Grande—a truly Catholic hero who has been put through the wringer for defending Catholic sexual teaching at the school board. Please keep Mike in your prayers.
New Brunswick is quickly descending into moral chaos under the new Holt Liberal government. David Cooke spells out how the province is hellbent on pushing abortion and transgender surgeries on the province’s next generation.
And, the neighbouring province of Nova Scotia is planning to open its third transgender clinic where children will be mutilated and castrated in an attempt to change them into the opposite sex. These clinics are evil and engage in child abuse. God, have mercy.
There are some excellent good news stories this week. I was glad to see the U.S. House vote to defund abortion giant Planned Parenthood. This is a huge step in the right direction, even though, as American Life League pointed out, there is a major flaw in the bill—an exception clause that still funds abortion in cases of rape, incest, and the mother’s life.
Make sure you catch my reflection at the end about the problematic rise of bubble zone legislation—this time around places of worship.

Quebec Life Coalition: Media once again unleash their malice against pro-life legislations
“You may have read some strange headlines recently, such as the one TVA Nouvelles recently produced: ‘Even dead, a pregnant woman must stay plugged in because of Georgia's abortion laws’. The headline refers to a pregnant woman who has been declared ‘brain dead’ and whose bodily functions are being maintained, if the headline is to be believed, so that the baby her body is carrying can be born, under an abortion law.”
Western Standard: Surely it cannot be that babies born alive after an abortion, are left to die?
'But in Alberta, that is the policy of Alberta Health Services... Inhumanity knows no bounds.'
Catholic News Agency: Canada’s lack of disabilities minister criticized by pro-life advocates

Euthanasia Prevention Coalition: Canada's euthanasia lobby is pushing for child euthanasia.
“Child euthanasia is wrong, based on the meaning of effective consent. Euthanasia is wrong because it enables doctors and nurse practitioners to literally kill their patients.”

“…two former political figures turned commentator seriously considered—out loud—that the ‘solution’ might be…death.”

Campaign Life Coalition: Premier Holt’s promotion of abortion, gender ideology puts New Brunswick’s future in jeopardy

The Ultimate Abortion Debate | Lila Rose at UC Irvine: “Lila Rose, founder and president of Live Action, was scheduled to debate Destiny on the issue of abortion... But Destiny never showed. So we opened the floor to the students of UC Irvine to debate Lila, ask her questions, and open up a dialogue on one of the most important issues of our time.”
Maureen,
The Globe and Mail published an editorial this week in which it claimed that "the right to free speech has a companion: the right not to listen."
The piece called attention to recent protests surrounding Canada’s Jewish communities due to Israel’s response to the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas attack. The creation of bubble zones around faith-based institutions is now moving quickly in Ottawa and Toronto.
Interestingly, the Globe piece uses bubble zones around abortion mills as justification for the creation of new bubble zones around places of worship.
“Bubble zones have been accepted for decades in Canada when applied to abortion clinics,” the Globe’s editorial board states. “It’s not hard to see why. Protesters of course have a right to demonstrate against, say, the provision of abortions; but don’t women entering clinics have a right to enter without hostile messages shoved in their face?”
The problem with this perspective is that there is no right "not to listen" anywhere in Canada or, for that matter, in the free world.
George Orwell, author of 1984, once famously said: “If liberty means anything at all, it means the right to tell people what they do not want to hear."
A democracy that takes away speech rights from any group is quickly moving toward totalitarianism.
It must be stated clearly that I'm talking about speech rights here, not death threats or other threats of violence. We already have solid laws in place that protect the rights of citizens when it comes to life, liberty, and security of the person. It is these laws that must be enforced if protests or demonstrations threaten public safety, not the creation of more bubble zones.
Bubble zones have no place in a free and democratic society. They are used to strip citizens of their right to free speech.
They were first used to strip pro-life advocates of their right to peacefully and lovingly speak in defence of the preborn targeted for abortion. Now, they are being used to strip additional citizens of their speech rights. Is it only a matter of time before all of Canada becomes a bubble zone? Is it only a matter of time before there is no longer a right to speak in the public square?
These are the kinds of questions Canadians must ask as more and more bubble zones are enacted.
Pro-life advocates are actively working to overturn provincial bubble zone legislation in Ontario. Fr. Tony Van Hee’s constitutional challenge in the Superior Court of Justice remains ongoing. If we win this case, it will likely create a domino effect that will topple all subsequent bubble zones.
Muzzling speech is something no Canadian should tolerate.
Be bold and daring for life!
