Dear Maureen, I’m Pete Baklinski, and this is your Canadian Pro-Life News Bits – where I let you know what’s happening on our country’s pro-life and pro-family front.
All of us at Campaign Life Coalition (CLC) were deeply alarmed this week by the Carney Liberals teaming up with the Bloc in a plan to remove religious freedom protections from the Criminal Code.
If Bill C-9 goes through, speaking certain passages from the Bible in public could be construed as “hate speech,” and there would no longer be protection from such accusations in the Code. The end result could inaugurate an outright persecution against Christians, including for their pro-life beliefs. I’ve included a few stories for you to read about this worrying development, including a letter of “deep concern” from the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops.
United Conservative Party members passed a host of pro-life and pro-family policy mandates last weekend, including many endorsed by us at CLC. Not all the policy recommendations that passed were worded perfectly. For instance, the policy about ceasing funding for third-trimester abortions “except in cases where the physical health of the mother is at serious risk” is problematic because it implies that it is ethical to fund abortions with taxpayer money prior to some arbitrary gestational age—which, of course, it is not!
Bill C-218, a private member’s bill that, if passed, would prevent the implementation of euthanasia (MAiD) for mental illness alone, is being debated today for the first time in the House of Commons. Please pray that this bill receives support from all parties and passes. Many lives will be saved if this bill becomes law.
Health Canada released the latest euthanasia (MAiD) statistics showing that a total of 16,499 Canadians were killed this way in 2024. The numbers are up from the previous year. MAiD killings now account for a shocking 5.1% of all deaths in Canada. Every single one of these deaths is an offence against God’s commandment: “Thou shalt not murder.”

Maureen, I was heartened this week when Conservative MP Marilyn Gladu (Sarnia—Lambton—Bkejwanong, ON) criticized the Liberals for claiming to support a woman’s “right to choose” while actively working to take away real choices by attacking pro-life pregnancy centres.
Here’s what she said:
“I will say that the Liberals are always talking about a woman's right to choose. However, if women really have a right to choose, then some of them are going to choose to have babies, and they are going to need pregnancy crisis centre supports. Therefore I am glad to see that recommendation 429 did not make it into the budget.”
MP Gladu was referring to the budget recommendation that would have revoked the charitable status of pro-life groups had it been included in the recent budget, which, thankfully, it was not.
Gladu is absolutely right. When it comes to pregnancy, it seems that the only “choice” the Liberals want to promote is abortion. They are the party that promotes the killing of preborn children. It was Trudeau who banned pro-lifers from even being candidates for the Liberal Party. The entire Liberal caucus is, in fact, the party that champions death, not only through abortion, but now also through assisted suicide (MAiD).
I was glad to see MP Gladu point out this glaring disconnect in the Liberal Party when it comes to women’s choices. And I was glad to see her rise in defence of pregnancy care centres.
These centres are the heart and soul of the pro-life movement here in Canada. They do the groundwork of being present for mothers at the most crucial moment when they are deciding their future. Please pray for these centres and for the good people who work—many volunteering—in them.
And above all, continue to stand firm in the fight. The battle to end abortion is real, but so is the grace God gives us to do this work of defending His little ones courageously and faithfully. With His help, we will one day end abortion.
